MEDFORD, Mass. –
Ben Callahan-Gold (New York, N.Y.) dropped 20 points while four other Bantams reached double-digits in scoring to lead the No. 7-seeded Trinity College men's basketball team to a 90-76 victory over No. 2 Tufts University in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon. The Bantams will travel to No.1 Wesleyan University on Saturday, Feb. 26 for a semifinal matchup with the winner playing the following day in Middletown, Conn. at noon for the NESCAC Title.
Tufts' Brennan Morrison opened the contest with a 3-pointer and the Jumbos held the lead for the first 16 minutes of play. A steal by senior captain
Donald Jorden Jr., (Tampa, Fla.) led to a knockdown jumper from classmate and fellow captain
Tyler Mola (Leominster, Mass.) to tie the game at 19-all before Mola buried a 3-pointer on the next offensive possession to give Trinity its first lead of the day. Morrison later closed out the first half with a buzzer beating 3-pointer to give the home team a 44-40 lead at the break.
Callahan-Gold and the rest of the Bantams offense began to heat up in the second half as the visitors went on a 23-6 run and back-to-back 3-pointers from the first-year forward gave Trinity its largest lead of the game of 15 with eight and half to go. The Jumbos managed to cut it to a seven point game at the 4:48 mark but just as Tufts was beginning to gain some momentum, senior tri-captain Donald Jorden, Jr. poked the ball away from Theo Henry and junior
C.J. Redd (Peekskill, N.Y.) came away the loose ball to then knock down a jumper in transition to bring the lead back to nine.
The Jumbos began to pressure the ball handler from the inbound but Redd single handedly took care of business, spinning past his defender at the half court and completing a coast to coast drive for a layup. Tufts quickly answered with a 3-pointer from Tyler Aronson, however, it was once again Redd responding. On the very next possession he buried a deep-ball of his own followed by a steal on the defensive end which led to a fast break that was capped off with a pretty behind the back pass to sophomore
Gilbert Otoo (Burtonsville, Md.) for the easy layup. The play came with just under two minutes remaining and the Bantam lead was extended to 11, which ultimately put the game out of reach for the Jumbos.
Callahan-Gold added six rebounds, a steal and a block to go along with his team-high 20 points. Redd finished with 15 points and a pair of steals while Jorden, Jr. registered 14 points and each collected six rebounds apiece. Otoo led the team with seven boards while Mola chipped in five assists. Both tallied 13 points on the day. Luke Rodgers posted 24 points for Tufts to lead all scorers in the contest while Dylan Thoerner recorded 21 points of his own. Trinity out rebounded the Jumbos 42-36 and shot 48.6 % from the field with a 45.8 % clip from beyond the arc.
