AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Nico Smith earned a save for the University of Wisconsin-EAU Claire in a 10-9 victory over the Trinity College baseball team, putting an end to a seven-run rally and leaving the Bantams just one run shy of tying the game in the ninth inning on Monday afternoon. Trinity shifts to 3-3 and face SUNY Cobleskill tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. while the Bluegolds improve to 3-4 and square off with Union College for a 10 a.m. first pitch on Tuesday.

Wisconsin held an 9-2 lead after six innings but the Bantams began to rally in the top of the seventh when sophomore
Bennett Teceno (Centerville, Mass.) scored from third on an error by the catcher and junior
Patrick Dillon (Bronx, N.Y.) singled to left field brining in sophomore Jack Matthews (Westport, Conn.) to cut the deficit to five runs. Trinity then added two more in the eighth thanks to an
Andrew Tuozzolo (Pittstown, N.J.) RBI, bringing home sophomore
Sean Meth (Sands Point, N.Y.) and leaving the bases loaded for Teceno who was hit by a pitch which walked in a run to bring the Bantams to within three. However, a well-executed bunt from Nate Witte allowed Drew Salyers to score from third in the bottom of the eighth for the Bluegolds.

Trailing 10-6 in the ninth, an error by the Wisconsin shortstop led to first-year
Tanner Fairchild (Sarasota, Fla.) and Meth crossing home followed by a pass ball that brought in senior
Colin Mann (Dedham, Mass.) to cut the Trinity deficit to just one run. With one out, Matthews flied out to the center fielder and junior
Alex Chang (Sands Point, N.Y.) tagged from third in an effort to score the game-tying run but was gunned down by the center fielder in an 8-2 double play to end the game.

Meth went 3-for-5 on the day while Tuozzolo led the Bantams with three RBIs. Witte was 2-for-3 for the Bluegolds and recorded four RBIs. Xavier Estrada pitched five innings and earned the win on the mound while Nico Smith closed out in the ninth and picked up the save.
