HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College baseball team lost to the Bowdoin Polar Bears, 15-6, in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) matchup Friday afternoon on Murren Family Field at DiBenedetto Stadium. It is Bowdoin's first NESCAC game, moving their record to 8-10 overall, and 1-0 in the conference, while Trinity falls to 8-8 on the season (2-2 in NESCAC). Both teams resume action in a double-header tomorrow starting at noon at Murren Family Field to finish a three-game series.
Bowdoin was fueled by a great performance from sophomore starting pitcher Jack Mullen who went eight innings and held the Bantams to six runs in a winning effort. Bantam's senior starting pitcher Jimmy Fahey (Danbury, Conn.) allowed three runs in three innings pitched. The Polar Bears got off to a fast start, with two quick runs in the first inning to jump out to a 2-0 lead. Sophomore shortstop CJ Brito-Trinidad added an RBI single in the third inning to make it a 3-0 lead for Bowdoin. The visitors then added another three runs in the fourth to push their lead, 6-0. Sophomore first baseman Sean Meth (Sands Point, N.Y.) led off the fourth for the Bantams with a triple, and senior outfielder Colin Mann (Dedham, Mass.) hit a sacrifice fly to score Meth from third, putting Trinity on the board, 6-1. The Bantams added another run in the fourth, making it a 6-2 game heading into the fifth inning.
In the top of the fifth inning, Kevin Murray ripped a triple in the right center gap that was mishandled by the center fielder allowing him enough time to round third and score, making it 7-2 Polar Bears. In the seventh, Bowdoin's Gabe Peckler, hit a moonshot over the right field fence, adding another run for the Polar Bears. Bowdoin loaded the bases and scored two more in the inning, making it 10-2 after the top of the seventh. Peckler later hit another home run in the eighth, this time a three-run shot, extending the Bowdoin lead to 13-2. In the bottom of the eighth, Meth recorded a double, and later scored after a Trinity fielders choice to make it 13-3 Polar Bears. The Bantams added three more runs in the inning, including a two-run homer from Sophomore infielder Bennett Teceno (Centerville, Mass.) to make it 13-6 going into the ninth inning. Brito-Trinidad hit a two-run home run for Bowdoin, making the lead 15-6 in the ninth. Brito-Trinidad finished with five Runs Batted In for the game.
