Trinity Field Hockey Shuts Out Hamilton In First NESCAC Game

HARTFORD, Conn. - Junior forward Demarest Janis (Cos Cob, Conn.) scored the first two goals of her career to lead the Trinity College Bantams to a 3-0 win over the visiting Hamilton College Continentals in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) women's soccer action this afternoon on Sheppard Field.  Trinity, ranked No. 5 nationally, improves to 2-0 overall with the victory in its league opener, while the Continentals fall to 1-1 overall and 0-1 in the NESCAC.  Trinity hosts the Worcester Polytechnic Institute next on Wednesday, September 14 at 7 p.m. and Hamilton entertains Rochester on Tuesday at 6 p.m.  Caelin Flaherty (Upton, Mass.) scored the game's other goal and assisted Janis on the first of the game just 1:06 into the contest.

Janis' first marker came on the first shot of the game, but the teams managed just three more the rest of the opening quarter.  The Bantams rattled off six shots in the second frame and its defense held the visitors without a shot over the same period but the score remained at 1-0.  Flaherty gave the Bantams a 2-0 lead on a rebound, after Hamilton goalie Abby Griffin had saved a shot by Bantam junior Katrina Winfield (Wilmington, Del.).  Claire Tratnyek hit the post for the visitors with under a minute left in the third quarter.  Janis' second goal put the game out of reach with 9:19 left to play.  Trinity junior goalkeeper Olivia McMichael (Glenside, Pa.) had to make one of her two saves late against Hamilton's Delaney Grace and Lilly Truchon hit another post for the Continentals.  Griffin had three stops for Hamilton.
