HARTFORD, Conn. — Katrina Winfield (Wilmington, Del.) padded the triumph for the Trinity College field hockey team with three goals against Smith College in the home opener on Thursday. The Bantams improved to 1-0 overall, while the Pioneers dropped to 2-2.
The scoreboard received no love until Winfield tallied her first goal of the game four minutes into the second quarter off the stick of Riley Nichols. The junior found the back of the net two more times across the final two quarters.Â
Nine minutes into the second half, Winfield capitalized off the pass by Jackie Frank (Longmeadow, Mass.) to put the Bantams up by two. Frank recorded her first assist seven minutes earlier in the third quarter after setting up rookie Harper Siemens (Tulsa, Okla.) following a penalty corner.
Frank connected with the net to close out the Bantam scoring with six minutes remaining in the final quarter.
Junior goalkeeper Olivia McMichael (Glenside, Pa.) saved nine shots, while Rory Harper nabbed seven Bantam shots. Smith attempted 13 shots in the arc but couldn't connect with the net.
