HARTFORD, Conn. — After leading after the half by 20 points, the Trinity College women's basketball team continued to overpower the visiting Roger Williams Hawks as the Bantams win 58-41 on Monday. Trinity improved to 15-1 overall with a 12-game win streak, while RWU dropped to 12-3. The team sets off on a road trip to nearby Wesleyan University for the Bantams fourth New England Small College Athletic Conference matchup of the season at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
Reilly Campbell (Wallingford, Conn.)Â was a force in the first half with 15 points, while
Bria Fuller (Springdale, Md.) dominated defensively to force Hawk turnovers and keep the basket opportunities sparse. Twenty-one seconds into the opening quarter, Fuller goes airborne for a good jumper in the paint and notches the first points of the night. A minute later the senior steals the ball from Katie Galligan which leads to a jumper in the paint by
Emma Wax off the pass from Campbell. With the score 4-2, Campbell puts up her first points of the night with a step-back jumper in the paint off the hands of
Frankie Silva (Auburndale, Mass.). After a missed three-point shot by the Hawks, Wax snatches the rebound for another Campbell jumper, with the added bonus of a foul, which lends to a three-point play for the junior. Forty seconds later, the center repeats the play, this time with a layup in the paint off the pass from
Hannah Marzo (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and a good free throw attempt. With an 11-point lead, Fuller makes a clean block on a Galligan jumper in the paint to hold the Hawks to only five points.
Trinity only allowed eight points in the second quarter, while putting up 17 capped off by a buzzer-beater layup in the paint by
Samantha Slofkiss (Marlboro, N.J.) after the first-years offensive rebound. A three-point bucket by Wax puts Trinity up by 18 for the largest lead in the opening two quarters. The Bantams had nine second-chance points and converted for four points off turnovers in the first half, while never letting up the lead. The home team had 16 points in the paint, with 10 in the first quarter and seven points from the bench.
Marzo connected on a good free throw to open the third quarter and grew the lead by 21 points, as Trinity led 34-13. Roger Williams played a strong third quarter with 15 points and brought the deficit to within 15. After the free throw, the visitors went on a 12-3 run to shorten the gap to a manageable 12-point deficit but Campbell's blocked shot, defensive rebound and layup on the other side of the hardwood quickly shut down the Hawks rally. Campbell and Fuller both went to the line and made both their free throws, followed by three successful free throws ended the third quarter.
Wax quickly went to the hoop with a jumper to put Trinity up, 45-28. To close out the quarter,
Lucy Dorion(Needham, Mass.)Â grabbed the defensive rebound and lobbed it over to
Madison Stevens (Burlington, Conn.)Â for a
Theresa Twardosky jumper (Merrimack, N.J.). The bench posted nine points, while the team made nine second-chance points. Campbell led the team with a double-double for 23 points, 10 rebounds and also recorded two assist, a pair of blocks and a steal. Wax had 10 points, four rebounds and an assists, while Fuller notched eight points, five rebounds, a block and a steal. Stevens set up several of the Bantams well-fought shots, with six assists on the night.
