Henry Vetter (Kenilworth, Ill.) scored 22 points, including eight in overtime, to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to an 87-80 overtime victory against the Colby College Mules in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's basketball action this evening. Trinity improves to 12-1 with the victory in its conference opener, while Colby drops to 12-2 overall and 0-1 in the league with its first loss in five games. The Bantams will visit NESCAC rival Bowdoin tomorrow at 3 p.m. and Colby hosts Wesleyan at the same time.
Trinity never trailed during the frenetic overtime, beginning with two free throws by Vetter five seconds after the jump ball. Vetter added a layup seconds later to give Trinity a 70-66 lead but Max Poulton made a three-pointer for Colby to tie the game at 74-74 with just under three minutes left. Bantam rookie
Jarrel Okorougo (Stoneham, Mass.) ignited an 8-0 run with a dunk, as the Trinity defense forced three turnovers over the next two minutes. The Bantams went 9-for-10 from the foul line to outscore Colby, 21-14, in the extra session with Vetter sinking all six of his tries from the charity stripe.
Trinity came out strong, taking an 18-10 lead just over nine minutes into the first half after a Vetter layup. Colby fought back and tied the score at 24-24 on a traditional three-point play by Lucas Green with 6:48 on the clock. Trinity used a 7-1 run late in the first to take an eight-point lead n the final minute but two Mule free throws made it, 35-29, at the break. Trinity senior captain
C.J. Redd (Peekskill, N.Y.), who led the Bantams with seven points at halftime, scored four quick points to give the visitors a double-digit lead. Colby took the lead back at 45-44 with 12:31 on the clock thanks to a Green layup, but Vetter answered with a three-pointer. Trinity led the rest of the second half until the Mules scored five points in the last 28 seconds of regulation to force the overtime.
Five Trinity players finished in double figured in scoring, as Redd scored 17 points, sophomore
Will Dorion (Needham, Mass.) had 14, Okorougo had 13 points, and first-year forward
Trevor McDonald (Elmont, N.Y.) added 11 points off the bench. The Bantams owned the boards, finishing with a 53-36 rebounding edge. Okorougo grabbed 11 boards, Redd had nine, and Dorion and McDonald grabbed eight rebounds apiece.Green paced the Mules with 23 points and Noah Tyson scored 17 points with 11 rebounds.
