HARTFORD, Conn. - The Trinity College Women's Soccer team posted a 2-0 victory over visiting Middlebury College during a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) battle at the Trinity Soccer Field Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Bantams improve to 6-3-3 overall and 4-2-2 in the NESCAC, while the Panthers drop to 1-3-3 in conference and 5-3-4 on the season.
HIGHLIGHTS
- Less than two minutes into action following a Bantam handball just outside the 18-yard box, Gigi Day bent a free kick from the right that Trinity goalie Mariana Cournoyer punched over the crossbar.Â
- The hosts looked to get on the scoreboard with 4:56 elapsed when Tori Simas ripped a right-footed shot from a sharp angle that was saved by Middlebury goalkeeper Carolyn Kelley on the right post.
- The Bantams struck first at 12:44 following a corner kick. Elena Lindonen collected the bouncing ball in the box, roofing her shot into the upper portion of the goal for the 1-0 lead.
- Looking for the equalizer, a left-footed blast by Panther Lucy Patton sailed just over the crossbar from 22 yards out with 19:22 elapsed.
- Trinity nearly increased the advantage in the 27th minute, but Alyssa Keane saw her bid from close range sail just wide of the left post.Â
- With 29:54 gone in the opening half, Sofia Quijada sent a long-distance bending shot that Kelley came off her line to save and keep the Bantam edge at 1-0.
- Middlebury pushed to level the contest in the early stages of the second frame. The best chance came when a header from Jazzaray McClinton following a corner went just over the crossbar with 7:39 elapsed.
- In the 65th minute, Trinity looked to make it a two-goal contest when Lindonen ripped a shot from just inside the box but Kelley dove to her right to save the bid.
- Nearly seven minutes later, a quick turnaround one-touch by Abby Ward at the edge of the box rifled just over the bar and out of play.
- The Bantams pushed their lead to a pair with 8:41 showing on the clock. Following a Middlebury foul in the penalty box, Gabby Grattan stepped to the dot and buried the attempt into the lower-right corner for the 2-0 triumph.
The Bantams will look to remain in the win column when Trinity hosts Johnson & Wales University Sunday afternoon at Trinity Soccer Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
