HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Women's Volleyball team overcame a 2-1 deficit to defeat visiting Connecticut College, 3-2 (21-25, 25-16, 18-25, 26-24, 15-11), in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) tilt at Oosting Gymnasium Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Bantams improve to 12-5 on the season, and 5-3 in the NESCAC, while the Camels dip to 2-7 in conference and 9-9 overall.
The Camels maintained control throughout the first set, racing to a 12-4 lead behind a trio of kills from Emma Wheeler. The Bantams settled in a battled back as a kill from senior
Lola Craig (Los Angeles, Calif.) capped a 7-2 run to close the gap to 14-11. The Camels rattled off eight straight points to pull away as Amanda Kreidler and Riley Lord knocked three kills each. Trinity mounted another rally with a 10-2 run, but a kill from Katerine Randall handed the Camels the 25-21 win.
The Bantams came out on the attack in the second set, jumping to a 9-3 lead, powered by a pair of kills from junior
Bella Caffuzzi (Brooklyn, N.Y.). A kill from junior
Eva Lekovic (San Marino, Calif.) doubled up the Camels, 14-7, and then maintained their lead with a pair of kills from Craig and Lekovic to hold a 19-12 advantage. Sophomore
Ellie Gordon (Los Angeles, Calif.) delivered a trio of kills and junior
Ava Boloyan added a kill and an ace to claim the 25-16 win.
The sides traded the lead to kick off the third set until an 8-3 run pushed the Camels ahead 12-6. Trinity trimmed the deficit to 13-10, but Conn College padded the lead with a 6-0 to move ahead 19-10. The Bantams battled back with a 5-1 run until Randall sandwiched two kills around a Camels service ace en route to the 25-18 win for Conn College.
No more than four points separated the teams during a competitive fourth set. Tied 5-5, the Camels pulled ahead 8-5, until a kill from Lekovic capped a 5-2 run to even the score at 10-10. A pair of kills from Wheeler helped escort the Camels lead to 19-15, but kills from Gordon and McCarthy kept the Bantams close, 20-19. The Camels looked to be on the doorstep of victory following a 4-1 run to set the score at 24-20, but Trinity persevered with six straight points, featuring kills from Craig, McCarthy and Lekovic to capture the 26-24 victory to force a final fifth set.
Caffuzzi knocked a pair of kills to give Trinity an early 3-2 lead in the final frame. The Bantams began to pull away with a 5-1 run, featuring two kills from Lekovic, to build an 8-3 advantage. The Camels closed the gap to 10-7, but three straight points from Trinity halted the Camels run. Conn College tried one more run, setting the score at 13-10, but a dump kill from junior
Grace Sullivan (Fort Worth, Texas) and a final tally from McCarthy sealed the Bantams victory.
Lekovic led the Bantams attack with a match-high 16 kills and five blocks. Craig tallied 12 kills with a block, while Gordon chipped in 11 kills and a block. McCarthy totaled nine kills with two blocks, and Caffuzzi added eight kills with a career-high nine blocks. Sophomore
Caroline Howell (Houston, Texas) recorded another double-double with a team-high 32 assists with 14 digs, while first-year
Scarlett Jago (Allentown, Pa.) grabbed a match-high 26 digs in the win.
The Bantams will look to move their win streak to four games with a non-conference road test at Clark University Friday night. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
