Box Score HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Men's Soccer team cruised past visiting Vermont State University Castleton, 6-0, in a non-conference tilt at the Trinity Soccer Field Wednesday night. With the win, the Bantams improved to 5-6-2 on the season, while the Spartans dropped to 4-9-1 overall.
In the 11
th minute of play, the Bantams forced a corner kick in the Spartans end of the field. On the ensuing attempt, senior
Quinn Ackman (Evanston, Ill.) curled a pass to the front of the goal, where first-year
Jack Murphy (Alexandria, Va.) elevated over a defender and headed home the feed from Ackman, to stake the Bantams to a 1-0 lead.
With 1:28 remaining in the first half,
James Donaldson received a long pass into the Spartans zone, worked around his defender and ripped a shot from 25 yards out into the upper 90 of the net, beating Castleton graduate keeper Andres Soto Burgos (Bronx, N.Y.) and extending the Trinity lead to 2-0 heading into halftime.
The Bantams wasted little time cracking the scoreboard in the second half as senior
Michael Traynor (Rye, N.Y.) served a cross into the box, finding junior
Nick Bellak (Amherst, Mass.), who delivered a header past Spartan senior keeper JP Maul (Westwood, N.J.) to set the score at 3-0.
In the 59
th minute, Bellak found Donaldson on a break to the far post, and Donaldson delivered the finish for his second goal of the day, extending the Trinity lead to 4-0. Sophomore
Zobran Elias (Lilongwe, Malawi) and
Finn Hackett (Ipswich, Mass.) registered their first career goals in the 64th minute and 73rd minute, respectively, en route to the 6-0 victory.
"I'm really, really pleased with our performance overall," said Trinity Head Coach Methembe Ndlovu. "We started well and then got a little bit shaky towards the end of the first half, but I thought they managed the second half really well, led by our captain [Donaldson], who set the tone early. These kinds of performances can only give us confidence as we head to Williams, but we are well aware of the challenge ahead. We just need to take care of the little things and not focus on the scoreboard when we play this weekend. Obviously Williams is a very solid side, but we can only manage what we put into the game and the rest will take care of itself."
The Bantams dominated the shot column, 27-5, and corner kicks, 13-1, during the contest. Trinity sophomore
Nate Dyott (Tarrytown, N.Y.) and junior
Matt Birnhak (Dix Hills, N.Y.) combined for the shutout in goal and notched one save each, while Burgos made a match-high six saves and Maul stopped one shot for the Spartans.
The Bantams will be back in action when they travel to Williams College for a New England Small College Athletic Conference match Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
