After playing to a scoreless tie after the first half of action, the Cardinals looked to crack the scoreboard in the 51
st minute as senior Lina Rodriguez (San Diego, Calif.) knocked down an attempted clear by the Trinity defense and had a one-on-one opportunity with Bantams senior keeper
Mariana Cournoyer (St. Paul, Minn.), who made a clutch diving save on the shot from Rodriguez to keep the match at 0-0.
With less than 32 minutes remaining, the Bantams were called for a foul about 30 yards from their own goal, awarding a free kick to Wesleyan. On the ensuing free kick, first year Kerenza Leahey (Exeter, R.I.) lofted a ball toward the Trinity goal, where a sea of bodies converged, but Cardinals junior Katie O'Connell (North Kingstown, R.I.) found a lane and deflected the ball past Cournoyer to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
As the clock ticked under 21 minutes to play, the Bantams evened the score on a corner kick. Senior
Cassie Lee (Newton, Mass.) curled the corner attempt towards the Wesleyan net, where senior
Tori Simas (Newburyport, Mass.) knocked a one-timer past Cardinals keeper sophomore Molly Brumbach (Montclair, N.J.) to make it a 1-1 score with 20:55 on the clock.
The squads were unable to decide a winner over the next 40 minutes, forcing the match to be determined on penalty kicks. The penalty kick series went seven rounds, and in the final round an attempt from Trinity junior
Sofia Quijada (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) was stopped and then Wesleyan sophomore Waverly Myers (Stamford, Conn.) converted her chance to lift the Cardinals over the Bantams.
The Cardinals edged the Bantams in shots 15-12, and corner kicks, 6-3. Cournoyer made a match-high 11 saves, while Brumbach stopped eight shots for Wesleyan.
