HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Men's Basketball team led wire-to-wire in a 74-38 non-conference victory over visiting University of Hartford Sunday afternoon at Oosting Gymnasium. The Bantams improved to 2-0 on the season, while the Hawks dropped to 1-1 overall.
The Bantams jumped on the Hawks early as a sophomore
Jarrel Okorougo (Stoneham, Mass.) hammered home a dunk off a steal from classmate
Henry Vetter (Kenilworth, Ill.) to give Trinity a 13-4 lead with 15:24 on the clock. With less than 10 minutes to play in the first half, first-year
Jared Berry (Danvers, Mass.) swiped the ball from the Hawks and found sophomore
Sean Macarchuk (Croton-on-Hudson, N.Y.) for a fast break layup to extend the Bantams lead to 26-8. Vetter buried a three-pointer at the 5:32 mark to hand the Bantams their largest lead of the half, 35-15. Trinity took a 40-23 lead into the break.
The Hawks trimmed the gap to 42-28 with 16:37 to play behind a three-pointer from Trayon Rumbley ( ), but the Bantams responded with a 15-2 run over the next five minutes, powered by 10 points from Vetter to rebuild a 57-30 lead. Trinity continued to put the Hawks in the rear view as first-year
Paul Ippolito (New Canaan, Conn.) canned a three-pointer from the corner to give the Bantams their largest lead of the game, 70-32. Junior
Alex Douglas (Elmont, N.Y.) and sophomore
Drew Herer (Needham, Mass.) connected on late buckets to send the Bantams to the 74-38 victory.
"That was a good win for us," said Trinity Head Coach
James Cosgrove. "Hartford beat Baruch the other night, and Baruch was in the NCAA Tournament last year. Our guys really battled on both ends and made great decisions offensively and clamped them down defensively. I think one thing that separates us is that we have unbelievable depth on our bench. We can put in 11-13 guys who can play and really help us. It's a great luxury to have. For stretches we have great ball movement, made the right plays, and then we had stretches where guys were trying to do too much on their own. If we can clean that up, and play some really good team basketball, I think we can be very good. We'll need the same effort and mindset against Wheaton on Wednesday."
The Bantams edged the Hawks on the glass, 35-31, and controlled the paint, 34-16, during the contest. The Trinity bench outscored the Hartford bench, 27-17. The Bantams shot 30-fo-61 (49.2%) from the field, including 9-of-27 (33.3%) from three-point range, and 5-of-6 (83.3%) from the foul line.
12 players reached the scoring column for Trinity, led by Vetter with a game-high 17 points, shooting 6-of-12 from the floor, eight assists and five rebounds. Senior
Ben Callahan-Gold (New York, N.Y.) and Macarchuk netted 12 points apiece.
The Bantams will be back on the court when they host Wheaton College in non-conference action Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
