ITHACA, N.Y. – The Trinity College Women's Basketball overcame a first half deficit to defeat host Ithaca College, 61-50, in a non-conference battle at Ben Light Gymnasium Monday night.
The teams battled back-and-forth to open the first quarter as a layup from junior
Hannah Marzo (Shrewsbury, Mass.) evened the score at 8-8 with 4:57 on the clock. The Bombers began to build a lead with a 11-4 run, paced by four points from Zoraida Icabalceta, to hold a 19-12 lead after the opening frame.
Ithaca maintained their advantage through the second quarter, using a 9-4 run, capped by a jumper from Junie Dickson, to take their largest lead of the game, 28-16, with 5:29 to play in the half. Sophomore
Samantha Slofkiss (Marlboro, N.J.) knocked down back-to-back jumpers to close the gap to 28-23, and the squads would add late free throws to head into the break at 30-25.
Trinity limited the Bombers to nine points in the third quarter, opening the period with a three-pointer from sophomore
Theresa Twardosky (Merrimack, N.H.) and layup from senior
Reilly Campbell (Wallingford, Conn.) to even the score at 30-30. Tied at 34-34, the Bantams closed the third quarter on a 14-5 run, powered by eight points from Campbell, to grab a 48-39 advantage heading into the fourth quarter.
Trinity pushed the lead to double digits early in the fourth, and then a three-point play from senior
Bria Fuller (Springdale, Md.) escorted the Bantams lead to 55-41 at the 6:38 mark. Campbell netted the final six points for the Bantams to secure the 61-50 victory.
The Bantams edged the Bombers in rebounding, 41-35, and dominated the paint, 36-22, and bench points, 32-12, during the contest. Trinity converted 22-of-62 (35.5%) attempts from the field, including 1-of-18 (5.6%) from three point range, and 16-of-18 (88.9%) from the free throw line. Ithaca shot 16-of-43 (37.2%) from the floor, 2-of-10 (20%) from three-point range, and 16-of-26 (61.5%) from the foul line.
Campbell led the Bantams offense with her first double-double of the season, netting a game-high 24 points, shooting 9-of-14 from the floor, with a game-high 14 rebounds and two assists. Fuller added nine points and two rebounds, while Marzo chipped in seven points with five rebounds. Senior
Emma Wax (Pine Brook, N.J.) grabbed seven rebounds with four points in the win.
The Bantams will be back on the court for their home opener against Albertus Magnus Friday night at the Trinity Tip-Off Tournament. Tip-off is schedule for 5:30 p.m. and will be followed by a game between Connecticut College and Skidmore at 7:30 p.m.
