HARTFORD, Conn. – The #11 Trinity College Women's Basketball team was outlasted by visiting fourth-ranked Rhode Island College, 60-56, in a non-conference battle at Oosting Gymnasium Wednesday night. The Bantams move to 4-2 overall, while the Anchorwomen own a 6-0 record.
The Anchorwomen held an early 5-0 lead, but the Bantams fought back with a 7-0 run behind four points from senior Reilly Campbell to give Trinity a 7-5 lead with 2:35 remaining in the first quarter. Rhode Island College evened the score at 7-7, but the Bantams used a pair from free throws from senior Emma Wax and a bucket from Campbell to hold a 11-9 edge after one quarter.
The Anchorwomen took control in the second quarter, using a 10-5 run to secure a 19-14 lead. Rhode Island College maintained their lead the remainder of the period as a layup from Olivia Middleton extended the Anchorwomen lead to 26-16 at the 1:41 mark. Campbell netted a late layup and Wax knocked down a three before the buzzer to close the gap to 26-21 at the half.
The Bantams came out of the break hot, rattling off a 7-2 run over the opening three-plus minutes, behind five points from Campbell, to even the game at 28-28. At the 1:57 mark, Indi DelRocco knocked down a three-pointer to give the Bantams a 36-34 lead. The Anchorwomen responded behind four points from Madison Medbury to regain a 41-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
A pair of treys from Medbury pushed the RIC lead to 47-41, but Trinity answered behind five straight points from Wax to close the gap to 48-46 with 7:29 to play. Rhode Island College kept the Bantams at bay with a 8-3 run over the next four minutes to hold a 56-49 lead. Trinity whittled the lead down to a possession as Campbell delivered five points and connected on a turnaround jumper to set the score at 58-56 with 1:56 on the clock. The Bantams were unable to convert on a couple last minute opportunities and forced to foul, where the Anchorwomen secured the 60-56 victory.
Campbell led the Bantams with a season-high 24 points and 10 rebounds. Wax netted 13 points with five rebounds and four assists, while DelRocco added five points and two rebounds off the bench.
Medbury paced all scoring with a game-high 25 points with a team-high eight rebounds. Middleton chipped in 11 points and four rebounds in the win.
The Anchorwomen outrebound the Bantams, 35-33, while Trinity controlled points in the paint, 28-20. The Bantams converted on 21-of-47 (44.7%) from the floor, including 3-of-11 (27.3%) from three-point range, and 11-of-18 (61.1%) from the foul line. Rhode Island College shot 22-of-56 (39.3%) from the field, 7-of-19 (36.8%) from beyond the arc, and 9-of-17 (52.9%) from the free throw stripe.
The Bantams will be back in action with a non-conference road trip to Stevens Saturday afternoon. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m.
