#11 Women's Basketball Downs Stevens, 70-59

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The #11 Trinity College Women's Basketball defeated host Stevens Institute of Technology, 70-59, in a non-conference game at Canavan Arena Saturday afternoon. The Bantams improved to 5-2 on the season, while the Ducks dropped to 5-3 overall.

The Bantams controlled play early in the first quarter as a layup from senior Reilly Campbell handed Trinity an 8-4 lead with 4:24 remaining in the frame. A three-pointer from Paige Gorczyca put the Ducks ahead 11-9, but sophomore Melissa Whitmore answered with a trey on the other end of the floor to regain a 12-11 lead for the Bantams. Whitmore added a late jumper, but Stevens answered with a three-pointer from Olivia Schubiger to even the score at 16-16 after one quarter of play.

Sophomore Samantha Slofkiss and senior Bria Fuller connected on back-to-back buckets to put Trinity ahead 20-16 early in the second. The Ducks regained a 21-20 advantage at the free throw line, but sophomore Theresa Twardowsky jarred consecutive three-pointers with 5:09 to play to take back a 26-21 lead for Trinity. Another three-pointer from Whitmore put the Bantams up double-digits, 32-22, but the Ducks closed the gap to 34-26 heading into the break.

The Bantams offense came out hot in the third quarter, executing a 13-5 run over the opening four minutes, featuring seven points from Campbell, to extend the Trinity advantage to 47-31. A jumper from Slofkiss at the 3:27 mark handed the Bantams their largest lead of the game, 51-33, but the Ducks responded with a 12-2 run over the final minutes of the period to trim the deficit to 53-45 heading into the final quarter.

A layup from Kayla Decker put Stevens within two possessions, 55-49, with 8:01 to play, until the Bantams rattled off 12-0 run, powered by three-pointers from Twardowsky and junior Hannah Marzo, to build a 67-49 lead with 4:41. The Ducks pulled off a late run to close the gap to 68-59, but two late free throws locked up the 70-59 victory.

Campbell powered the Bantams offense with her third double-double of the season, posting a game-high 19 points, shooting 8-of-11 from the floor, with a game-high 16 rebounds and three assists. Twardowsky chipped in nine points with three rebounds, while Fuller and Whitmore added eight points and three rebounds each.

The Ducks had four scorers in double figures, led by 13 points from Kay Decker. Lucy Alberici tallied 11 points, while Leyla Castro and Dorothy Loffredo notched 10 points apiece in the loss.

The Bantams controlled the rebounding column, 38-30, points in paint, 30-24, and bench points, 22-8, during the contest. Trinity connected on 25-of-49 (51.0%) from the floor, including 6-of-19 (31.6%) from three-point range and 14-of-21 (66.7%) from the foul line. Stevens shot 21-of-61 (34.4%) from the field, 5-of-15 (33.3) from three-point, and 12-of-19 (63.2%) from the free throw line.

The Bantams return to the court when they travel to Emmanuel College for a non-conference game Tuesday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
