HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Women's Basketball team led wire-to-wire during an 88-52 victory over visiting John Jay College in a non-conference contest at Oosting Gymnasium Saturday afternoon. The Bantams rise to 7-4 on the season, while the Bloodhounds drop to 6-6 overall.
Graduate Bria Fuller kicked off the scoring for the Bantams with a layup off the opening tip and a three pointer to build a 9-0 lead with 6:56 remaining in the first quarter. Junior Indi DelRocco knocked down a jumper and then swiped the ball on the defense end and found first year Avery Marzo on a fast-break layup to escort the lead to 20-8 with 1:55 on the clock. Sophomore Lillie Cumming sandwiched a pair of layups around a three-pointer from first year Olivia Vick to give Trinity a 27-10 lead heading into the second quarter.
The Bloodhounds worked at the deficit with an 12-7 run over the opening minutes of the second quarter, but Vick knocked down a pair of treys to rebuild a 44-23 lead with 1:55 on the clock. First year Kiki Fossbender added layup in the final minute to give Trinity a 46-24 lead at the break.
The Bantams used a 9-4 run over the first five minutes of the third quarter to possess a 57-30 advantage. The Bloodhounds rattled off a 7-1 run over the next two minutes until Vick halted the momentum with three straight three-pointers, including a buzzer-beater, to give Trinity a 67-39 lead.
Vick netted another three-pointer to open the final frame, followed by buckets from Avery Marzo, sophomore Melissa Whitmore, and sophomore Maya Carnes to build a 78-48 lead with 5:23 to play. The Bantams closed the game with a pair of buckets from Fossbender, while Carnes went 4-for-4 from the foul line to secure the 88-52 victory.
Vick led the Bantams with a career-high 23 points, shooting 8-of-14 from the floor and 7-of-10 from three-point range, and two rebounds. Avery Marzo registered a career-high 11 points with five rebounds, while sophomore Theresa Twardosky added nine points, three rebounds and an assist. Whitmore grabbed a career-high eight rebounds, while Hannah Marzo chipped in six points, five rebounds and four assists in the win.
Graduate Chayenne Kelly paced the Bloodhounds with a team-high 21 points and five rebounds. Graduate Kamryn Hammond tallied 10 points with five boards, while graduate Hannah Ruberto had nine points and two rebounds.
The Bantams controlled the rebounds column, 47-36, and points in the paint, 38-24. The Bantams bench contributed a season-high 60 points in the win. Trinity shot 35-of-73 (47.9%) from the floor, including 11-of-30 (36.7%) from three-point range, and 7-of-11 (63.6%) from the foul line. John Jay connected on 17-of-60 (28.3%) from the field, 1-of-17 (5.9%) from three-point, and 17-of-19 (89.5%) from the foul line.
The Bantams will be back on the court when they host Babson College in non-conference action at Oosting Gymnasium Tuesday at 2:00 p.m.
