MEDFORD, Mass. The Trinity College women's basketball team closed out their regular season with a nail-biting loss to the Tufts Jumbos in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) action. Junior center Reilly Campbell (Wallingford, Conn) led the Bantams on both ends of the court with 13 points, four assists, and seven rebounds. Trinity, ranked No. 10 in the nation, falls to 20-4 overall and 7-3 in the NESCAC. Tufts improves to 17-6 overall, and 8-1 in the league. The Bantams will compete in the NESCAC tournament on Saturday, February 18, with the time and location to be announced.
Trinity wasted no time stacking points on the board in the first quarter of action, as they quickly went up 6-0 against the Jumbos. Tufts rapidly climbed back up the ladder, as the Bantams were left scoreless for the final three minutes of the first quarter, and ended with a score of 17-13 in favor of Tufts off of a buzzer-beater by Caitlyn O'Boyle. Trinity ended the first half down by eight, with notable performances coming from Campbell, senior guard Bria Fuller (Springdale, Md), and junior forward Emma Wax (Pine Brook, N.J.). Fuller dominated on the court in the first half of play with pure grit, notching five rebounds and a steal, while Campbell controlled the offensive end with six points and two assists. Wax showcased her strengths on both sides of the court in the first half of action, as she recorded seven points and four rebounds.
Sophomore guard Hannah Marzo (Shrewsbury, Mass) struck first in the second half, with an impressive and-one play. The Bantams pushed the pace in the beginning minutes of the second half, but Sophia Gonzalez responded for the Jumbos with back-to-back three-pointers to put Tufts up by nine with just over five minutes left in the third. The Bantams started the fourth quarter down by 12, but first-year guard Theresa Twardosky (Merrimack, N.H.) came up big for Trinity, scoring two three-pointers with just over three minutes to go in regulation. Campbell reclaimed the lead for the Bantams with under 30 seconds to go with a layup assisted by Wax. With one second left in regulation, Maggie Russell netted two clutch free throws for Tufts to ultimately edge them over Trinity by one.
