HARTFORD, Conn. —
Ian Brown (Tampa, Fla.) recorded his first win this season on the mound, while
Cooper McGrath (South Hamilton, Mass.) notched his first career save in the come-from-behind 3-2 victory at home with Nichols College on Friday. Trinity improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Bison fell to 1-6. The Bantams remains at home on Sunday against the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with an 11 a.m. first pitch.
The visitors jumped out ahead in the second inning with a run by Stanley Cipkas after Jacob Tipton reached first off an error by the shortstop after Cipkas doubled as the ball trickled along the left side line and no outs on the board.
Alex Chang (Port Washington, N.Y.) recovered from the run with three outs as Taj Vera Cruz grounded out to the pitcher, Kyle Birks struck out swinging and Karl Miller flied out to the right fielder
Colin Mann (Dedham, Mass.). Chang retired eight Bison in five innings of work, with a single run allowed on a pair of hits.
Nichols held that one-run lead as John Steed continued to work through four scoreless innings. Steed's outing ended after he allowed his first two batters faced in the bottom of the fifth to get on base.
Patrick Dillon (Bronx, N.Y.) disrupted Steed's scoreless run after the senior doubled centerfield to get on the bags, advanced to third off a successful bunt by
Brandon Chow (Greenwich, Conn.) and eventually crossed home plate off a sacrifice fly to centerfield by
Tyler Bernstein (Ponte Verda, Fla.).
The teams remained deadlocked at 1-1 through the sixth inning before Dillon was welcomed home for the second time to take the lead thanks to a single to right field by
Jack Mathews (Westport, Conn.). Dillon found a spot on the bags after a single to left center and helped along with a sacrifice bunt by Chow.
William Sawyer (Easthampton, Mass.) singled to left center and advanced to second off a pass ball before a two-bagger through the left side by Mann brought the first-year home for an insurance run.
Brown posted an incredible 3.2 innings of work with five strikeouts and a lone hit and a run. Two outs glowing on the scoreboard and a pair of walkers on base in the ninth inning by Brown led to a change by the Navy & Gold as McGrath stepped on the hill. Simultaneous steals by the Bison's put the visitors in scoring position with the tying run on second in the midst of the seniors first batter with the count at 2-2. McGrath loaded the bases in back-to-back at bats as the gap decreased by one with Trinity leading, 3-2. The final Bison went down swinging for the final out of the game following a no-hitter bottom of the ninth inning.
