HARTFORD, Conn. — After a 3-1 deficit in the first quarter, first-year
Molly McGuckin (Darien, Conn.) netted back-to-back goals for the game-tying and eventual game-winner in a narrow 14-13 Trinity College women's lacrosse victory on their home turf, Robin L. Sheppard Field, over the visiting Roger Williams University Hawks on Sunday. The Bantams improved to 4-1 on the season, while RWU dropped to 3-4. Trinity takes it second road trip of the season to Colorado College on Wednesday for a 4 p.m. matchup.
Roger Williams led off the scoring in the opening period by Ryleigh Cavanaugh off the pass from Julia Kelley before
Lily Ives (Chappaqua, N.Y.) evened it up a little over a minute later with a close shot just left of the goalkeeper. Two straight Hawk goals a minute a part padded the lead for RWU, butÂ
Brooke Kurtz (Alexandra, Va.) ignited the rally with a bullet dead center in the net with nine minutes left in the first before McGuckin's pair of successful shots put Trinity up, 4-3.Â
Ives connected for three straight goals in the second quarter for a hefty 8-4 Bantam lead and totaled six overall. After the half, Roger Williams woke up to score five-consecutive goals in the third period to bring RWU within one 11-10, with the last by Cavanaugh two seconds shy of a shot clock violation and with only 55 seconds left in the quarter. In the rally, Cavanaugh accounted for a trio of goals, including one player down goal and one up. Ives padded the lead with a pair of back-to-back goals, followed by one from rookie
Grace Denious (Wilton, Conn.) to put the Navy & Gold up, 14-10. Another Hawks rally put the fear in the Bantams with three-straight goals in the final five minutes, but
Casey Ward (Norwell, Mass.) won the final draw control with 11 seconds to spare to keep the Bantams alive.
In the net for Roger Williams, Caroline Roach tallied seven saves, while
Alyssa Vitale (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) and
Ali Macdougall (Southbury, Conn.) split time in the box for a total of six saves as Vitale recorded her fourth win of the season. McGuckin recorded three goals and Ward assisted on a trio.
