Softball Notches First Win of the Season in Doubleheader Split

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Trinity College softball team battled through a doubleheader in the Sunshine state to come out on top, 6-0, against the University of Old Westbury but fell in game one with the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater on Tuesday. Trinity improved to 1-5 overall, while Old Westbury dropped to 1-3 and Wisc.-Whitewater 5-1. The Bantams face St. Lawrence University on March 23 at 11:30 a.m. and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh at 2 p.m.

Abigail Alper (Weston, Fla.) crossed home in the fourth inning against Wisconsin-Whitewater for the lone Bantam run as Kennedy Rogers (Pomona, Calif.) brought the first-year home. A strong four-run first frame put Wisconsin up, 4-0, followed by a run in the second and sixth innings.

In the opening inning with SUNY Old Westbury, Taylor Mikolajczak (Johns Creek, Ga,) scored after getting into scoring position of a stolen base as Tiffany Stowers (Burke, Va.) walk with the bases loaded brought the sophomore home. Alper's triple in the second stanza put the rookie in prime position before Erin Steed's (Orland Park, Ill.) line drive to short stop allowed Alper to come home. The Navy & Gold notched four more runs across the third and fifth innings, including a pair by Lizzie Nelson (Rockville, Md.). Stowers denied any runs and recorded seven strikeouts as a trio came in the opening inning.
