HARTFORD, Conn. — After being down by three runs, the Trinity College baseball team rallied back in the sixth and seventh innings capped off by walk-off run by
James Stefanowicz (Norwalk, Conn.) off
Sean Meth's (Port Washington, N.Y.) single nabbed a game one victory over No. 8/10 Endicott College, 5-4, on Sunday. In game two of the doubleheader, Endicott topped the Bantams after an eight-run 13th inning for a 14-5 Trinity loss. The team improved to 7-4 overall, while the Gulls moved to 10-3. Trinity remains at home with a Monday matchup at 4:30 p.m. against Dean College.
After six scoreless innings, Endicott notched a trio of runs ignited by Robbie Wladkowski's sacrifice fly to centerfield brought home John Mulready. In the bottom of the sixth, the Navy & Gold retaliated with a pair of runs in back-to-back plays.
Tyler Bernstein (Ponte Verda, Fla.) led off with a walk before
Jack Mathews' (Westport, Conn.) double tightly along the left field line brought the first year home one batter later. In the number three hole, Meth tripled to right field after the wind carried it slightly to the warning track to give Matthew time to cross home and bring the deficit to within one, 3-2. Endicott had a chance to score in the fourth inning with two Gulls on base, but a tough leaping line drive by
Patrick Dillon (Bronx, N.Y.) cooled off Endicott before a groundout to Bernstein ended the inning to strand three.
In his second inning of work,
Michael Aceto (Hamden. Conn.) allowed the possible game-tying run to double to centerfield before rectifying the sticky situation as the right hander struck out a swinging Gull and the potential game-leading run at bat.
Sam Craven (Wakefield, R.I.) opened the seventh with three batters up and three down to quickly get out of the inning before Mathews brought home Stefanowicz and
William Sawyer (Easthampton, Mass.) with two outs on the board. The visitors tied it up at four a piece in the top of the ninth before Stefanowicz's walk-off run put Trinity in the win column.
Endicott scored the first run of game two in the fourth inning followed by a pair of Bantams as Stefanowicz and
Dylan Schnitzer (Huntington, N.Y.) came home in the bottom of the frame. In the next stanza, the visitors padded the lead by one with a run off a single to right field and the game-leading run off a wild pitch. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Stefanowicz grounded out to second base which allowed Meth to score to knot the game at 3-3. Schnitzer put Trinity up by one with a single to right field and brought
Brandon Chow (Greenwich, Conn.) home in the eighth inning but Wladkowski's single up the middle forced extra innings.
The teams remained deadlocked at 4-4 until a run by both teams in the 12th inning tied it again as Schnitzer's single allowed Stefanowicz to score. Endicott pulled away from the home team with eight runs in the 13th inning ignited by a hit batter with the bags loaded.
