HARTFORD, Conn. —To open New England Small College Athletic Conference play, the Trinity College baseball team fell to 8-2 to Colby College after the Mules went back-to-back innings with home runs at Murren Family Field on Saturday. The Bantams fell 9-5 and 0-1 in the NESCAC, while Colby moved to 11-3 and 1-0. Trinity continues league action in a noon doubleheader with Colby on Sunday.Â
A two-run homer out of left field in the first inning set the pace for the visitors, followed by a three-run blast in the second quickly put Colby up.
Jack Ryan (Bethesda, Md.) singled to centerfield to bring
Tyler Bernstein (Ponte Verda, Fla.) home in the bottom of the first. The rookie landed on the bags with a single to right field, and advanced to third after
Jack Mathews (Westport, Conn.) grounded out to the shortstop and
Sean Meth (Port Washington, N.Y.) reached first off an error by second base.
A great double play by Meth and Matthews, followed by a strikeout by
Alex Chang (Port Washington, N.Y.) kept the third inning short for Trinity against Colby.
Brandon Chow (Greenwich, Conn.) scored after Meth walked with the bags full of Bantams in the fourth inning to shorten the deficit to three as the Mules led, 5-2. The visitors tacked on three more runs across the fifth, sixth and eighth innings.
The bullpen combined for eight strikeouts with Chang leading the charge with five in five innings of work. Ryan went 3-for-5 with an RBI, while Bernstein hit 2-of-4 with a run scored and a walk.
