Trinity Men's Lacrosse Beaten At MIT

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Nick Stiles had seven goals and one assist to lead the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to a 19-15 win over the visiting Trinity College Bantams in men's lacrosse action this afternoon on Roberts Field.  Trinity falls to 4-5 and MIT improves to 8-2.  Trinity hosts New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) rival Connecticut College next on Wednesday, April 4 at 7 p.m.  Senior Ryan Werner (Weston, Conn.) and sophomore Jon Krikorian (Lexington, Mass.) notched two goals and two assists each for the Bantams.

After a flurry of offense during the first seven minutes of the game, Trinity took a 5-4 edge when Krikorian scored a man-up goal on a feed from senior tri-captain Harrison Ike (Allentown, Pa.) with 5:39 on the clock. The score remained unchanged until MIT rattled off three goals during the final 2:25 of the frame.  The Engineers carried the momentum into the second stanza as they added four goals, including two by Stiles, in the first seven minutes, increasing their lead to 11-5.  Jack Almeida ended the Bantams' scoring drought at the 4:33 mark, setting off an exchange of goals that gave the hosts a 13-7 halftime lead.

Early in the third quarter, Trinity narrowed the gap to four courtesy of goals by junior Dane Crowley (Pelham, N.Y.) and Almeida but MIT replied with a three-goal burst that moved the score to 16-9. The Bantams responded with their own three-goal spurt and Werner being a factor in each goal. He assisted on an Andrew Bailey (Madison, N.J.) goal and then had his own unassisted tallies which brought Trinity within 16-12 with 1:32 on the clock. The Engineers countered with two goals during the last 27 seconds of the third and Stiles scored what proved to be MIT's final goal which came at the 11:48 mark of the fourth quarter. The Bantams went on to score three goals as rookie Jay Ottomanelli (Garden City, N.Y.) started the run and classmate Ethan Cobb (Matthews, N.C.) netted the final two, both on feeds from Krikorian.

Cobb had a hat trick while Trinity sophomore Hugh Curran (Needham, Mass.) notched two caused turnovers. Crowley totaled seven ground balls and junior goalie Cooper Yaccino (Kenilworth, Ill.) produced 15 Bantam saves, seven ground balls, and two caused turnovers. In the MIT net, senior Devin McCabe(New Castle, N.H.) made three saves in the first half as senior David Vapnek turned away six shots down the stretch.  MIT sophomore Matthew Sardis (Bernardsville, N.J.) won 24 of his 33 faceoff attempts and collected 12 groundballs. This was the first meeting between both programs since 1994 and the Engineers' first victory over the Bantams since 1988.
