Trinity Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader And Series On The Road Against Bates

LEWISTON, Maine - Junior SS Jack Mathews went 4-for-8 with two RBIs and a stolen base to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to a 4/9-2/7 doubleheader sweep against the Bates College Bobcats in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) East Division baseball action this afternoon on Leahey Field.  Trinity improves to 17-7 overall and sweeps the three-game set against the Bobcats with today's wins and yesterday's 7-5 triumph.  Bates drops to 12-12 overall and 1-8 in the division.  Trinity's 6-3 division record clinches a spot in the NESCAC Championship Tournament in May.  The Bantams will host Amherst College in its next game on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Trinity came from behind to win the first game today when junior 1B Sean Meth (Sands Point, N.Y.) tied the contest at 2-2 with a solo homer, senior tri-captain 2B Patrick Dillon (Bronx, N.Y.) doubled, and senior Colin Mann (Dedham, Mass.) drove Dillon home with a two-out single to the right side.  Trinity junior RHP Ian Brown (Tampa, Fla.), who ended the Friday game with a strikeout, pitched the last two innings and allowed three hits and no runs or walks to collect his second save in two days for classmate Sam Craven (Wakefield, R.I.) who was credited with the win in relief for recording the final out of the fifth inning.  Alex Chang pitched the 4.2 innings for Trinity, struck out seven, and yielded six hits, three walks, and one earned run for a no-decision.  Trinity added an insurance run in the seventh frame when Mann walked and came around to score on a Bobcat error.  Bates loaded the bases in its last turn at bat but Brown recorded the last two outs with a force-out at home and a strikeout.  Bates had broken a scoreless tie in the fourth inning when Brandon Biggane reached on an error and eventually advanced from second to home on two wild pitches.  Trinity rookie Dylan Schnitzer (Huntington, N.Y.) singled in the fifth inning and was driven home by junior James Stefanowicz (Norwalk, Conn.) in the top of the fifth, but Bates went back ahead, 2-1, in the bottom of the inning thanks to a two-out RBI single by John Nowak.  Mathews was 2-for-4 at the plate and Meth homered, walked, and scored twice. Nowak and Jack Brennan each had a single and a double for Bates, while Sam Hough took a hard-luck loss with six innings of work and three runs allowed with 5 K's.

Trinity jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second inning but needed three runs in the ninth frame to complete the sweep.  Bates committed two errors early in the second  and the Bantams took full advantage with six unearned runs.  First-year 3B Tyler Bernstein (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) and Meth both had RBI singles in the second stanza. The bats went quite for both squads over the next few innings before Bates touched Trinity sophomore starter Michael Aceto (Hamden, Conn.) for five runs in the sixth.  Jamieson highlighted the inning for the Bobcats with a two-run double.  The home team took a 7-6 lead with two more runs in the eighth inning on an RBI triple by Attal and a run-scoring single by Jamieson.  In the top of the ninth, Trinity's Yoshi Omi-Jarrett (Mill Valley, Calif.), Bernstein and Mathews all came through with RBI singles.  Sophomore lefty Jonathan Link (Holmes, N.Y.) came on to throw a scoreless ninth to save it for rookie Joseph Capanao (Scarsdale, N.Y.) who collected his first career win.  Bernstein and Meth each had three hits, while Mathews was again 2-for-4 at the plate, and both Meth and Mathews had two RBIs.  Jamieson was 3-for-4 with three RBIs for Bates.  Craven kept Bates at bay in the middle innings with five outs of scoreless pitching. McAslan was stellar for the Bobcats, pitching six scoreless innings as six of Trinity's nine runs were unearned.
