Trinity Softball Earns Split At Hamilton

CLINTON, N.Y. - Sophomore SS Taylor Mikolajczak (Johns Creek, Ga.) went 5-for-8 with three runs, a homer, two steals, and two RBIs, as the visiting Trinity College Bantams earned a 10/2-5/7 doubleheader split against the Hamilton College Continentals in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) softball action this afternoon at Loop Road Complex.  Trinity is now 8-12 overall and 3-5 in the NESCAC, while Hamilton moves to 16-14 overall and 6-8 in the league.  The Bantams will play conference foe Colby next in a road doubleheader on Saturday at noon.

Trinity scored five runs in the seventh inning to take the opener and snap a four-game losing skid.  Junior Tiffany Stowers (Burke, Va.) doubled with one out and senior C Alyssa Gazivoda (Poughquag, N.Y.) blasted a two-run homer to give Trinity a 7-5 lead.  The Bantams added three more runs with two outs later in the seventh on four consecutive singles including a run-scoring hit by junior 1B Kennedy Rogers (Pomona, Calif.) and a two-run single to right-center by rookie Abigail Alper (Weston, Fla.).  Stowers completed the game in the bottom of the inning in the circle, allowing seven hits and two earned runs with four strikeouts to improve to 8-5.

The Bantams had jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning thanks to RBI singles by Alper, sophomore OF Erin Steed (Orland Park, Ill.) and Stowers.  The Continentals took a 4-3 lead in the third frame, scoring three unearned runs and a fourth on an RBI single by Alison Zorn.  Trinity tied the game at 4-all in the fourth inning when Gazivoda walked and scored on two infield hits and a Continental error.  Mikolajczak singled, stole a base and scored on a single up the middle by Rogers in the sixth, but Hamilton answered with a run on a single by Natalie Beebe, a passed ball, a wild pitch and an error.  Alper and Rogers joined Mikolajczak wit three hits apiece for the Trinity offense and Alper had three RBIs. Beebe and Emma Tansky had two hits each for Hamilton, but Beebe also took the pitching loss in relief.

Trinity junior RHP Erin Girard (Bristol, Conn.) kept Trinity in a scoreless tie through two innings but the Continentals scored the game's first run in the third on an RBI triple by Alexis Mayer.  Gazivoda doubled and scored on a Mikolajczak single in the fourth frame but the home team scored twice in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI triple by Beebe and a run-scoring single by Charlie Quinn.  Zorn highlighted a three-run fifth inning for Hamilton with a two-run double before Mikolajczak led off the sixth with a home run to make the score, 7-2.  Stowers was the best of three Trinity pitchers in the game, tossing two scoreless innings in relief, while Girard fell to 0-6.Tansky hurled a five-hitter for the Continentals.
