WATERVILLE, Maine - Senior RHP
Erin Girard (Bristol, Conn.) allowed just two hits and a run and striking out three over 6.2 innings to lead the visiting Trinity College Bantams to a 2-1 victory over the Colby College Mules in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) softball action this afternoon. Trinity, which dropped the opener today, 7-2, is now 9-13 overall and 4-6 in the NESCAC with a home doubleheader against No. 9-ranked Tufts tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. Senior C
Alyssa Gazivoda (Poughquag, N.Y.) and first-year
Abigail Alper (Weston, Fla.) had RBI singles in the Trinity win.
The second game was scoreless through three innings despite consecutive singles to start the top of the second by Trinity junior
Tiffany Stowers (Burke, Va.) and sophomore OF
Erin Steed (Orland Park, Ill.). Gazivoda bunted the runners over but Colby starter Abby Orso got out of the jam. Stowers started off the fourth inning with a double and scored on a Gazivoda single. Girard was masterful, as Colby did not get a runner past second base over the first six innings and the Mules were retired in order in the second, fifth and sixth frames.
The Bantams added a necessary insurance run in the top of the sixth inning. With two outs, Trinity junior 1B
Kennedy Rogers (Pomona, Calif.) singled and first-year
Lizzie Nelson (Rockville, Md.) ran for her and immediately stole second base. Alper followed with a run-scoring single to give the visitors a 2-0 advantage. Colby rallied in the seventh and scored on an RBI single by Carissa Cassidy, but Stowers came on for Girard and got the last out to save the game. Stowers was 3-for-4 at the plate and Rogers was 2-for-4.
Trinity broke a scoreless tie in the third inning of the opener when sophomore SS
Taylor Mikolajczak (Johns Creek, Ga.) and Rogers scored on Mule errors. Stowers was stellar in the circle through four innings but Colby tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth frame with three singles and a pair of wild pitches. Colby broke the game open with a five-run sixth inning, including one run on an RBI double by Emma Burnham. Rogers was also 2-for-4 in this game, while Gazivoda had a double. Orso went the distance for Colby with four strikeouts and Hannah Masterson had two hits and two RBIs for the Mules.
