HARTFORD, Conn. — The Trinity College baseball team downed by Tufts University at home in a doubleheader on Saturday, with a close 7-5 game loss in the first game and a 5-1 defeat in the second. The Bantams moved to 17-11 overall and 6-6 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference, while the Jumbos improved to 22-6 and 9-0. Trinity hosts non-conference opponent Union College in a midweek matchup on Wednesdya at 6 p.m. on the Murren Family FIeld.
The Navy & Gold opened game one of the doubleheader with five unanswered runs ignited by
Jack Ryan's (Bethesda, Md.) single to right field to allow
Jack Mathews (Westport, Conn.) and
Patrick Dillon (Bronx, N.Y.) to score in the first inning.
Sean Meth (Port Washington, N.Y.) took advantage the back-and-forth between first and second base as Ryan attempted to steal second and scored Trinity's third run of the inning before the final out. In the following frame, Dillion singled to centerfield and allowed designated hitter
Andrew Tuozzolo (Pittstown, N.J.) to cross the plate.Â
After back-to-back singles by the Jumbos, Henry Fleckner singled up the middle to bring home Patrick Solomon and put the visitors on the board in the fifth inning. Tufts remained hot with four runs in the sixth to knot it at five apiece, but a pair of runs in the top of the seventh sealed the game for Jumbos. Trinity loaded the bases in the bottom of the sixth, but Cameron Mayer was able to work out of the jam, and Tufts took advantage in the top of the seventh.
In game two, Tufts quickly turned the ties with a home run ot of left field in the third inning followed by four more runs crossed home across the fifth and sixth. Ryan broke the scoring drought for the Navy & Gold in the seventh stanza with a single down the right field line as Matthews scored to put Trinity on the board, 5-1. Trinity connected for nine hits and stranded 13, while Tufts hit 10 and only left six Jumbos on the bags.
