HARTFORD, Conn. —
Kennedy Rogers (Phillips Ranch, Calif.) knotted the game at four apiece with a double in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra time for the Trinity College softball team in the narrow 5-4 game two loss against the United States Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday. The Bantams fell 9-0 for a mercy-rule loss in game one after five innings. Trinity moved to 9-15 on the season, while the Bears improved to 26-8. The team travels to Williams College for a doubleheader on April 29 starting at noon.
Coast Guard took a strong lead through the second and third frames in game two with four runs scored, before first-year
Rebecca Cassel-Siskind (Philadelphia, Pa.) brought home classmate
Lizzie Nelson (Rockville, Md.) in the bottom of the third to snap the Navy & Gold's scoring drought that started in the opening of the first contest.
Gianna Tito (East Hanover, N.J.) doubled to allow Cassel-Siskind cross home and narrow the deficit to two. In the seventh inning, Rogers hit a two-bagger to the warning track in the top of the seventh as Tito and
Taylor Mikolajczak (Johns Creek, Ga.) notched runs to even the score, 4-4, to force extra innings. With two outs on the board in the eighth frame, Selena Serena doubled along the right field line to allow Christine Carey, who was placed on second at the start of the inning, to score the eventual game-winning run.
The visitors notched nine runs through the second, third and fourth innings and Trinity stranded five on four hits, but couldn't capitalize for a run in the sweep.
