Late Rally Not Enough in 10-8 NESCAC Quarterfinals Loss at Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. — The No. 6 Trinity College men's lacrosse team narrowly dropped a 10-8 heartbreaker in the New England Small College Athletic Conference Quarterfinals at No. 3 Williams College on Saturday. The Bantams rallied twice late in the second and fourth quarters, but couldn't outlast the Ephs as they concluded their season 8-8 overall and 5-5 in the league, while Williams advanced with a 10-6 and 6-4 record.

The Navy & Gold held the home team to a single goal in the first quarter helped along with Cooper Yaccino's (Kenilworth, Ill.) trio of saves in the opening 15 minutes of action. Williams tacked on two more goals in the first five minutes of the second stanza, before first-year Ethan Cobb (Matthews, N.C.) connected for the Bantams first goal of the contest off the pass from Harrison Ike (Allentown, Pa.). Down 5-1, Trinity narrowed the deficit with three-straight goals of the sticks of rookie Jack Almeida (New Cannan, Conn.), Jon Krikorian (Windham, N.H.) and Cobb with a pair to finish out the second quarter and the third in the first two minutes of the second half.

One goal by both teams brought the score 6-5 in Williams favor before the fourth quarter. Ephs padded their lead by three-consecutive goals , 9-5. With 7:37 on the clock, Ryan Werner (Weston, Conn.) ignited Trinity's second rally of the day with the assist from Almeida. Two more goals by Almeida and Colin Sharp (Virginia Beach, Va.) brought the score to within one, before Adam Figler netted an insurance goal for Williams with less than two and a half minutes remaining in regulation. Williams led in groundballs with 37, while Trinity grabbed 24 with John Cowdrick (Lexington, Mass.) account for four. Yaccino made 16 saves in the goal for Trinity, while Matthew Freitas stopped 15 Bantam shots.
