HARTFORD, Conn. — With 10:53 left on the clock in the third quarter,
Jack Almeida (New Canaan, Conn.) netted the game-tying goal for the Trinity College men's lacrosse team, but the Bowdoin College Polar Bears were too much for the home team in a tough 20-15 loss on Saturday. Trinity moved to 5-6 overall and 2-4 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference, while Bowdoin moved to 8-3 and 4-3. The Bantams travel to nearby league opponent Wesleyan University for a 6 p.m. contest on Wednesday.
Peter Cannon (Houston, Texas) opened up the scoring for either team with a goal a minute and a half into the opening quarter, before Matt Ward evened the score 1-1 a minute later. After being down by four in the second quarter the Navy & Gold rallied back for four goals off the sticks of
Ryan Werner (Weston, Conn.),
Harrison Ike (Allentown, Pa.), Almeida and
Tyler DeSimone (St. James, N.Y.) for a 9-8 score going into the half.
Ike made a spinning pass to
Jon Krikorian in the opening minutes of the third quarter to even the score 9-9 before Ward netted the Polar Bears 10th a minute later. Three-straight goals by Almeida,
Andrew Bailey (Madison, N.J.) and Ike padded the Trinity lead by two with 9 minutes remaining in the third. The visitors retaliated for five-consecutive goals to close out the third quarter before Cannon snapped Trinity's scoring drought two and a half minutes into the final quarter and narrowed the deficit to two but a 5-2 scoring margin put the Polar Bears up, 20-15.
Almeida notched four goals and one assist on six shots on goal, while Ike recorded a trio with a helper on four shots. In the net Trinity goalkeeper
Cooper Yaccino (Kenilworth, Ill.) made 10 saves in regulation. Bowdoin outshot the Bantams 45-37 and had one more turnover than the home team with 11. Trinity had the lead twice and tied the game four times.
