NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Trinity College Women's Soccer team collected a road shutout over host Coast Guard Academy, 1-0, in a non-conference match at Nitchman Field Wednesday night. With the win, the Bantams improve to 3-2-3 on the season, while the Bears drop to 1-8 overall.
The Bantams looked to crack the scoreboard early, but attempts from senior
Lexi Hasbrouck (Hopkinton, Mass.) and classmate
Cassie Lee (Newton, Mass.) were turned away by Bears junior keeper Emily Scharnitzky (Charleston, S.C.). In the 22
nd minute, Trinity senior
Tori Simas (Newburyport, Mass.) was denied by Scharnitzky, and then she would add another stop on a shot from senior
Sadie Rudolph (Weston, Mass.) to keep the game scoreless at the half.
Less than five minutes in the second half, the Bantams grabbed possession following a Coast Guard throw in, and sophomore
Elena Lindonen (Boxford, Mass.) found Simas near the net, where she placed a low shot past Scharnitzky, to give Trinity the 1-0 lead.
The Bantams defense was stout over the next 40 minutes, limiting Coast Guard to only two shots en route to the 1-0 victory. Trinity looked for second-half insurance strikes from Rudolph, Lee, Hasbrouck, sophomore
Alyssa Keane (Dedham, Mass.) and first-year
Shea O'Neill (West Bridgewater, Mass.), but Scharnitzky stood strong.
The Bantams outshot the Bears, 15-7, and edged CGA in corner kicks, 6-3, during the contest. Trinity senior
Mariana Cournoyer (St. Paul, Minn.) delivered five saves in the win, while Scharnitzky tallied nine saves for Coast Guard.
Trinity returns to the pitch with a home New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) clash against Bates College Saturday afternoon. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Coast Guard hosts Emerson College Friday at 3:00 p.m.
