NORTHAMPTON, Mass. — A pair of goals by Katrina Winfield (Wilmington, Del) and Ashley Zigler (Falls Church, Va.) guided the Trinity College field hockey team in a 2-0 shutout on the road at Smith College on Thursday. The Bantams improved to 1-0 on the season, while the Pioneers dipped to 2-2. Trinity begins New England Small College Athletic Conference action on September 9 at Hamilton College.

Trinity dominated offensively with five shots in the first period, while the hosts couldn't attempt a shot. Winfield notched the eventual game-winning goal on a baseline play through the goalkeeper's feet at 7:56 in the second period. Smith found the striking circle twice in the second as Olivia McMichael (Glenside, Pa.) denied one Pioneers' shot with less than two minutes remaining in the period. Two periods later, a last-minute goal by Zigler as the junior connected with the netting after tipping in Izzy Deveney's pass in front of the goal with only 18 seconds remaining on the clock. Senior captain Kylie Tierney's (Garden City, N.Y.) play in the midfield anchored the Bantams and was a big presence on both defensive and offensive.

Starting Smith goalkeeper, Rory Harper faced an onslaught of Trinity shots with 11 attempts in under six minutes in the third period. During that offensive stretch, Demi Janis (Cos Cob, Conn.) drilled a close shot towards the net, but Coco Cornell denied the ball with a defensive save. McMichael nabbed a pair of saves through 60 minutes, while Harper faced 20 shots by the Navy & Gold. The visitors outshot Smith 29-5, while Trinity attempted 23 on target and the home team aimed a pair at the goal.
