HARTFORD, Conn. - #6 Trinity College Men's Basketball team displayed a gritty performance in Oosting Gymnasium on Friday night to defeat the visiting Connecticut College, 58-45 for the final. Bantams are lifted to a 16-0, 3-0 season, while the Camels drop to an 11-4, 2-1 record.
With a slow start to the game both teams were unable to get into a scoring rhythm. The Camels found more success on the offensive end holding a lead for the first seven minutes of the half. With just under five minutes left on the clock the court began to tilt in the Bantams favor as Trinity's Ben Callahan-Gold collected a steal, setting Will Dorion up for an easy transition two points tying up the score 14-14. In the following minutes the Bantams went on a 10-2 run with back-to-back treys from sophomore Henry Vetter and senior Callahan-Gold, score 22-16 with 2:50 left on the clock. Connecticut's Billy Whalen netted a three with 0:41 remaining in the first to knock the deficit down to a five point game, but was immediately answered by Callahan-Gold with a mid-range jumper to solidify the lead of seven to close out the half, 26-19.
After three minutes back into play Vetter hit nothing but net from beyond the arc to kick start the second half for the Bantams. Dorion found himself on the line after a steal and drawing a foul off of a fast break layup, the senior would cash in both free throws growing the Bantams lead to ten, 31-21. The Camels were relentless as they challenged Trinity's lead in the remaining ten minutes of play, at the 8:15 mark a Jarron Flynn lay up made it a two point game 36-34. In just under two minutes the Bantams made three crucial stops and collected eight points from Jarrell Okorougo, Vetter and Callahan-Gold to lift Trinity back to a ten point lead of 44-34 with 4:43 left in play. The Bantams controlled the rest of the game as they closed out the NESCAC contest 58-45 over Connecticut College for the final.Â
Henry Vetter powered the Bantams offense netting 4-for-8 from three and 4-for-4 from the line totaling a game-high of 18 points. Ben Callahan-Gold tallied 14 points while also hitting a hundred percent from the free throw line going 5-for-5. Sophomore Jarrell Okorougo dominated the boards with a game-high of 12 and added four assists to the mix. Junior Will Dorion collected a season-high of five steals, four assists and eight points in the night for the Bantams.
The Camels had two scorers in double figures, led by 16 points from David Murray who added 10 rebounds. Cam Schainfeld netted 12 for Connecticut with five assists and two rebounds.
The Bantams dominated the boards, collecting 47-34, points in the paint were led by the Camels with 36 to the Bantams 18. Trinity connected on 17-of-61 (27.9%) from the floor, including 6-of-19 (31.6%) from three-point range and 18-of-23 (78.3%) from the foul line. Connecticut shot 21-of-52 (40.4%) from the field, 3-of-17 (17.6%) from three-point, and 0-of-4 (0.0%) from the free throw line.
The Bantams will hit the road on Monday January 15th as they head to Worcester State University for a non-conference battle at 3PM.
