HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Women's Basketball used a strong second-quarter performance to pull away during a 61-50 victory over visiting Colby College in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) contest at Oosting Gymnasium Sunday afternoon. The Bantams improve to 12-5 on the season, and 3-1 in NESCAC action, while the Mules dip to 1-3 in conference and 9-8 overall.
Trinity trailed the Mules, 5-2, after the opening minutes of play until a six-point spurt from senior Reilly Campbell handed the Bantams a 10-7 with 4:00 remaining in the first quarter. Colby outscored Trinity, 4-1, over the final minutes to even the score at 11-11 entering the second quarter.
The Bantams offense kicked into gear with 21 points in the second quarter, featuring eight points from senior Emma Wax. Play remained close early as the sides tied twice until Wax sandwiched a pair of layups around a three-pointer from sophomore Melissa Whitmore to give Trinity a 23-18 lead. Another layup from Wax capped a 7-3 run from the Bantams to escort the lead to 30-21 with 3:12 on the clock. The Mules closed the gap to 30-25, but Wax added a late jumper to put Trinity ahead 32-25 at the half.
Campbell knocked down a pair of layups to open the third quarter, but Colby responded with a 6-2 run to make it 38-31. Following a layup from Campbell, junior Hannah Marzon knocked down a three-pointer from the top of the key to give the Bantams their largest lead of the game, 43-31, with 4:02 on the clock. The Mules used a 4-0 run to trim the deficit to 43-35, but Trinity closed the frame on a 3-1 run to hold a 46-36 advantage heading into the final period.
Colby mounted a comeback in the fourth quarter, orchestrating a 10-3 run over the opening six minutes to pull within one possession, 49-46. After exchanging free throws, the Bantams closed out the game with a 10-2 run behind six points from Campbell and four points from Marzo to lock up the 61-50 victory.
Campbell powered the Bantams offense with a game-high 27 points, shooting 9-of-12 from the floor and the free throw line, with nine rebounds and three blocks. Wax tallied eight points, eight rebounds and a team-high four assists. Marzo notched seven points off the bench, while graduate Bria Fuller grabbed eight rebounds with three points and two assists in the win.
The Bantams edged the Mules in the rebounding column, 40-37, and bench points, 17-16, while controlling the paint, 32-20. Trinity converted 21-of-55 (38.2%) from the field, including 3-of-10 (30%) from three-point range, and 16-of-22 (72.7%) from the foul line. Colby shot 16-of-54 (29.6%) from the floor, 5-of-17 (29.4%) from three-point, and 13-of-19 (68.4%) from the free throw line.
Trinity returns to action with a NESCAC road trip to Hamilton College (14-5, 2-3) Friday night at Margaret Bundy Scott Field House. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
