CLINTON, N.Y. – The tenth-ranked Trinity College Men's Hockey team defeated host Hamilton College, 6-1, in a New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) tilt at Russell Sage Rink Friday night. The Bantams improve to 13-3-1 on the season and 9-1-1 in conference, while the Continentals drop to 6-5-1 in the NESCAC and 11-5-1 overall.
Just over four minutes into the opening period, Trinity first-year Connor Sedlak won a faceoff in the Hamilton zone and senior Kyle Tomaso spun the loose puck to the point, where sophomore Kevin McKay fired a shot through traffic and over the shoulder of Hamilton senior goaltender Jack Grant to hand the Bantams a 1-0 lead.
With 5:04 to play in the first period, the Continentals attempted a long pass from behind their own net, but the pass was intercepted by Trinity sophomore Spencer Korona, who wristed a shot over the glove of Grant to push the Bantams advantage to 2-0.
Less than five minutes into the second period, the Bantams capitalized on a powerplay opportunity. Trinity won a faceoff in the Hamilton zone and junior Eamon Doheny tried to find Sedlak by the near post, but Sedlak's attempt was deflected across the goal mouth, and junior Alexander Mozian fired a one-timer into the open net, extending the Trinty lead to 3-0.
In the opening minute of the third period, the Bantams showed terrific puck movement as Richard Boysen carried the puck through center ice and into the Hamilton zone, engaged two defenders and played the puck to senior Devan Tongue at the point. Tongue spotted senior Ned Blanchard racing to the far post and delivered a quick past cross ice and Blanchard sniped a wrister over Grant's glove, making it a 4-0 game.
Just over two minutes later, a Hamilton shot was deflected into the neutral where Sedlak gathered and raced toward the Continentals net on a breakaway and beat Grant glove-side to pad the Trinty lead to 5-0. Tongue added an empty net goal with 1:58 to play to send the Bantams to the 6-1 victory.
The Bantams edged Hamilton in the shot column, 31-30, while the Continentals won in the faceoff circle, 35-27. Trinity sophomore goaltender Devon Bobak stopped a game-high 29 shots in the win, while Grant made 25 saves for Hamilton.
The Bantams return to action with a NESCAC road trip to Amherst College Saturday afternoon. Puck drops at 3:00 p.m.
