Box Score HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Women's Hockey team had a late goal from visiting third-ranked Amherst College force a 1-1 tie in a New England Small College Athletic Conference battle at the Koeppel Community Sports Center Sunday afternoon. The Bantams sit at 6-3-2 on the year with a 1-3-2 mark in the NESCAC, while the Mammoths hold a 8-1-2 record and are 6-1-2 in conference play.
Just over seven minutes into the opening period, the Bantams struck first as sophomore Emma Robertson gloved an attempted clear from the Mammoths, dropped the puck to her stick and found first year Marta Mazzocchi in the slot. Mazzocchi delivered a quick wrister that beat Amherst sophomore goaltender Natalie Stott glove-side to hand the Bantams a 1-0 lead.
As the Bantams were on the doorstep of victory in the final 15 seconds of play, the Mammoths capitalized with a 6-on-5 advantage and with 11.6 seconds remaining, Amherst sophomore Gretchen Dann fired a shot from the point, which was re-directed by senior Mary Thompson in front of the Bantams net, and past Trinity senior goaltender Hannah Leclair, sending the game to overtime.
Both squads had a chance to take the victory in the overtime period, but the netminders for both teams made big saves. Stott denied Trinity junior Martina Exnerova on a one-timer in front of the net, and then Leclair halted an shot a 2-on-1 opportunity to preserve the 1-1 tie.
The Bantams edged the Mammoths in the shot column, 22-17, and in the faceoff circle, 32-30. Leclair stopped 16 shots for the Bantams, while Stott made 21 saves for Amherst.
The Bantams will be back on the ice when they make a non-conference road trip to Plymouth State Tuesday afternoon. Puck drops at 4:00 p.m.
