HARTFORD, CONN. – The Trinity College Bantams football team reestablished themselves atop the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) standings in their handling of the Bowdoin College Polar Bears in week seven of play 34-14. In a second straight 14-0 first quarter it was the ground game that outlasted a surge from the Polar Bears to return to winning ways. In a defiant show following last week's result, the Bantams collectively rallied to put together a complete showing in all three phases.
Powered early by their offensive phase it was their catalyst, graduate quarterback
Zander Zebrowski who powered them out early to a 7-0 lead. It was senior wide receiver
Sean Clapp who facilitated Zebrowski's first touchdown drive totaling forty yards on three catches including a nine-yard touchdown. This comes after Clapp dominated Bowdoin with three touchdowns and well over two hundred yards receiving in last season's finale. He inches ever closer to receiving the triple crown for program history with two games left.
After imposing their will on Bowdoin's offense, Trinity's unit again got to work churning out another touchdown drive. It was highlighted by an athletic snag from junior wide receiver
Nolan O'Brien for twenty-three yards capped by a second
Sean Clapp touchdown. O'Brien continues his offensive tear, totaling close to one thousand total yards on the season nine touchdowns.
Next it was the defensive phase of the game that continued to dominate defending a short field off a Trinity fumble. This defensive effort, like many on the day, was spearheaded by one of the many talented defensive backs Trinity possesses. After the fumble, on fourth and seven senior safety Ronnie Scott II made a sound open field the tackle to stop the Polar Bear offense from reaching the redzone.
Off a Trinity interception and subsequent Bowdoin touchdown, the Bantam offense was able to compile a furious offensive drive in barely over a minute. This drive that lasted only three plays included fifty-six receiving yards including the 43-yard score from graduate tight end
Max Roche.
Up 21-7 late in the second quarter after driving deep into the redzone off the legs of Zebrowski and junior running back
Tyler DiNapoli. It was a fake field goal on 4
th and 2 that prevented the Bantams from going up more.
After trading punts early in the third quarter a Bowdoin march down the field resulted in a touchdown despite the best efforts of the defense including junior safety Jason Irizarry's athletic pass breakup in the endzone. The offense unable to muster a scoring drive leaned into their outstanding special teams game unleashing O'Brien for a 31-yard return with the ensuing offensive possession capped by a 34-yard field goal from senior kicker Matt Jumes.
Off the field goal, a similar opportunity presented itself for O'Brien on the punt return who fielded the ball late returning it for forty-one yards to prevent an offensive drive backed up. Instead, the Bantams offensive unit started near the fifty, and were able to churn out a touchdown drive off DiNapoli's legs to widen the lead to 31-14. His 95 rushing yards, including this 39-yard touchdown scamper, brings his season total close to 500.
The Bantams defense again came up tough quickly as an interception from junior corner
Charlie Cooper gave the ball right back to the offense. This was Cooper's second of the season while also being tied for first in the league with ten pass breakups. The offense stalled quickly which led to a second Jumes field goal.
With that kick late in the fourth quarter to put the Bantams up by three scores, Matt Jumes rewrites history as the school's all-time leader in field goals made with thirty in his legendary Trinity career.
On the ensuing Bowdoin drive it was Cooper who intercepted the Bowdoin quarterback bringing his year total to three which is tied for first on the team. Against Bowdoin junior linebacker
Amari Phillips led the team in tackles with eight and sophomore
Bryce Ferrell totaled three breakups during the contest as well.
Looking ahead, Trinity travels to Amherst College in their final away game of the season. The Mammoths are 2-5 on the season and the game is set to kick off at 1:00 pm in Amherst Massachusetts.
