Women's Basketball Grabs 75-62 Victory Over Springfield College

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Women's Basketball team matched the program record for three-pointers made in a 75-62 non-conference win over Springfield College at Oosting Gymnasium Sunday afternoon. The Bantams improve to 2-0 on the season, while the Pride drop to 2-2 overall.

The Bantams knocked down their most three-pointers in a game in 24 years, matching the program-high of 17 three-pointers set against Middlebury on February 4, 2000.

Trinity logged three players in double figures, led by a career-high 19 points and three rebounds from junior Theresa Twardosky. Twardosky shot 6-of-9 from the field, including a career-best 5-of-6 from three-point range. Sophomore Olivia Vick netted 13 points on 5-of-9 field goals, while junior Melissa Whitmore tallied 12 points and a team-high six rebounds. Sophomore Kiki Fossbender chipped in eight points, senior Hannah Marzo dished out four assists with five points, and junior Samantha Slofkiss pulled down six rebounds with five points in the win.

Junior Amanda Leary and senior Angie Czeremcha each scored a team-high 13 points for Springfield College, while Leary grabbed a game-high nine rebounds and Czeremcha had four rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal. Sophomore Kassidy Carano notched 11 points with a game-high three steals, and classmate Claire Finney added 10 points.

Every shot the Bantams made in the first quarter were from beyond the arc as the Pride jumped to an early 8-3 lead. Trailing 10-3 at the 7:23 mark, Trinity used triples from Vick, Marzo and Twardosky to even the score at 12-12 over the next five minutes. Whitmore added a pair of three in the final minutes to give the Bantams an 18-14 advantage.

Trinity expanded their lead to 30-14 with a 12-0 run over the opening three minutes of the second quarter. The Pride battled back with a 13-2 run over the next six minutes, featuring five points from Stefanie Padula, to trim the deficit to 32-27. The Bantams added buckets from Vick and Marzo down the stretch to take a 36-27 lead into halftime.

Locked in a two-possession game, 38-32, with 7:44 on the clock in the third, Whitmore jarred back-to-back trey, followed by a jumper from Slofkiss to rebuild a 46-34 lead at the 4:39 mark. The sides exchanged buckets over the final minutes of the frame, setting the score at 54-42 heading into the fourth.

"It's a huge win for us," said Trinity College Head Coach Maria Williamson. "We knew it was going to be a good test of our mental and physical toughness. As we are building our identity as a new team, we have to rebound and be good at the little things and we eventually did it. We went away from our details when we let them back in the game, but once we got stops and took advantage our pace, we found the resilience we needed. They zoned us today and knew the three was going to be open, but I've empowered them to take open shots and knock them down and I thought we saw that today more than anything. We found great shots for our teammates and may have taken more threes in transition than we will all year, but it was a really good performance overall."

Leading 56-46 with 8:12 to play, the Bantams put the game away with an 19-6 run, featuring five three-pointers to give Trinity their largest lead of the game, 75-52, with 3:19 remaining. The Pride added 10 points as the Bantams rolled to the 75-62 win.

The Pride edged the Bantams in the rebounding column, 33-29, and points in the paint, 30-12, while Trinity registered 41 points off turnovers and saw the Bantams bench outscore Springfield, 37-13. Trinity connected on 25-of-58 (43.1%) from the field, including a program-high 17-of-33 (51.5%) from three-point range, and 8-of-10 (80%) from the foul line. The Pride shot 20-of-52 (38.5%) from the floor, 4-of-17 (23.5%) from three-point and 18-of-21 (85.7%) from the free throw line.

The Bantams will look to remain in the win column when they travel to Vassar (3-0) for a non-conference clash Tuesday at 7:00 p.m.
