POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Trinity College Women's Basketball team faced off against the Vassar College Brewers on Tuesday night for the first time since the 1996-97 season. The Bantams continued their dominance over Vassar, securing a 75-63 victory and extending their all-time record to 19-1 against the Brewers. Trinity remained undefeated this season, improving to 3-0, while Vassar suffered its first loss, dropping to 3-1.
The Bantams had three players in double figures, led by sophomore Olivia Vick with 19 points and three rebounds. Vick's performance marked her second consecutive 19-point game. Senior Indi DelRocco added 12 points, including three three-pointers, shooting 60% from beyond the arc. Avery Marzo contributed 10 points, and Madi Forman led the team with nine rebounds, seven of which came on the defensive end, in addition to two blocks.
Vassar was led by senior captain Tova Gelb and senior co-captain Julia Harvey. Gelb recorded a team-high 20 points along with a game-high 11 rebounds, while Harvey scored 19 points, going 8-for-10 from the free-throw line.
In the first quarter, Trinity shot 6-for-12 from the field and 2-for-4 from three-point range. The Bantams controlled the game early, maintaining the lead for the entire period. Despite a layup from Gelb that pulled Vassar within one at 14-13 with 1:44 remaining, Trinity answered with a jumper from Kiki Fossbender to end the quarter with a 16-13 advantage.
Trinity extended its lead to 26-15 early in the second quarter with a 10-0 run over five minutes. The Brewers responded with a 6-0 spurt in less than a minute, but Trinity remained in control. A pair of free throws from Avery Marzo and four points from Vick helped the Bantams hold a 34-26 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Bantams extended their lead to 39-26 after a layup from Avery Marzo and a step-back three from Vick. Trinity maintained a comfortable lead, with a 51-40 advantage after a traditional three-point play by Avery Marzo with 1:26 left. However, Vassar closed the quarter strong, hitting a three-pointer and a layup in the final seconds to trim the lead to 51-45.
The Brewers continued their momentum in the fourth quarter, with three consecutive layups including one from Tash Thompson that tied the game at 51-51 with 8:21 remaining. From that point on, the game remained tight, with Trinity leading by just one possession after the Bantams hit three free throws and a layup from Hannah Marzo to make it 56-51. Trinity finished strong, closing the game with a 9-0 run to seal the 75-63 victory.
The Bantams outscored the Brewers 26-9 in bench points and 14-12 in second-chance points. Vassar controlled the rebounding battle, pulling down 44 boards compared to Trinity's 37, with the Brewers securing 17 offensive rebounds to Trinity's 7. However, Trinity grabbed 30 defensive rebounds to Vassar's 27. The Bantams shot 47.3% (26-of-55) from the field, 37.5% (6-of-16) from three-point range, and 77.3% (17-of-22) from the free-throw line. Vassar shot 33.3% (23-of-69) from the floor, 9.1% (2-of-22) from beyond the arc, and 78.9% (15-of-19) from the charity stripe.
The Bantams look to continue their success on the hardwood on Thursday, November 21st when they host Rivier University for a 7PM match up in Ray Oosting Gymnasium.
