HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Women's Ice Hockey team demolished visiting Albertus Magnus College, 10-2, in a non-conference clash at the Koeppel Community Sports Center Tuesday night. The Bantams rise to 3-0 on the season, while the Falcons drop to 1-5-1. This is the fifth time in program history the Bantams have registered 10 or more goals in a game, and the first time since a 10-0 victory at University of New England during the 2012-13 season.
It took less than a minute for the Bantams to find the back of the net as first-year
Caroline Holm won a face-off in the Falcons zone, and junior
Ava Gosnell played the puck along the blue line to senior
Annika Dyczkowski, who fired a shot on net that was re-directed by Holm past Albertus Magnus first-year goaltender Jess Trocchio, to give Holm her first collegiate goal, and the Bantams the early 1-0 lead.
With 10:15 remaining in the first period, the Bantams added to their advantage as sophomore
Marta Mazzocchi deflected an attempt clear from the Falcons, which was scooped up by graduate
Anne Levia who found first-year
Mikayla Murray in front of the net for her first collegiate goal to set the score at 2-0.
The squads combined for six goals in the second period, beginning as senior
Paige Kehoe grabbed a loose puck in the neutral zone, knifed through the Falcons defense and potted an unassisted tally with 17:16 on the clock. Albertus Magnus chipped away at the deficit with back-to-back goals from sophomore Tori Walsh and junior Kayla Clark to close the gap to 3-2 at the 12:37 mark. Less than a minute later, Murray struck again, converting off a feed from senior
Jelani Adorno to rebuild a 4-2 advantage.
The Bantams capitalized on a power-play with 10:14 remaining in the second period as senior
Martina Exnerova fired home a one-time off the feed from Mazzocchi to make it a 5-2 game. Murray netted her third goal of the game in the final minute of the period to put Trinity ahead 6-2 after two periods.
Sophomore
Sally Countryman scored the first goal of her collegiate career to ignite a four-goal third-period goals for the Bantams, re-directing a shot from junior
Ava Gosnell at the 12:48 mark. Just over thirty seconds later, Exnerova raced up the boards with the puck and sniped a shot past Albertus sophomore goalie Christmas Johnson to make it an 8-2 game. With 5:43 to play, Mazzocchi ripped a shot past Johnson that she never saw, and then Exnerova registered her first career hat trick to seal the 10-2 win.
The Bantams dominated the shot column, 42-6, and the face-off battle, 42-16. Trinity sophomore goalie
Madeline Carter logged a pair of saves in two periods of work, while first-year
Emma Eschweiler recorded two saves in her collegiate debut. Trocchio posted a game-high 21 saves, while Johnson added 11 saves in relief.
The Bantams will look to remain in the win column when they host #11 Hamilton College in a pair of New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) games Friday and Saturday. Puck drops at 7:30 p.m. on Friday for the series opener.
