HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Women's Basketball team remained undefeated on the season with a 91-82 victory over visiting Rivier University on Thursday night at Oosting Gymnasium. The Bantams improved to 4-0, while the Raiders dropped to 0-4.
Sophomore guard Olivia Vick led the way for Trinity with a season-high 26 points, going a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line and 6-for-8 from three-point range. Sophomore Madi Forman also had a standout performance, contributing a career-high 18 points, along with 8 rebounds and 1 block. Junior forward Melissa Whitmore added 14 points, including 4 three-pointers, also marking a career-best in both categories. Sophomore Avery Marzo chipped in with 10 points, a season-high, as well as 2 blocks and 1 assist.
Rivier was powered by senior Lyric Grumblatt, who scored 44 points—a season-high—while also grabbing 6 rebounds, dishing out 4 assists, and recording 1 steal. Senior guard Hannah Muchemore added 26 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals in the losing effort.
The first quarter was a high-scoring affair, with Trinity shooting 12-for-18 from the field and 6-for-7 from three-point range. The Bantams maintained a lead for most of the period, stretching it to a 7-point advantage with 19 seconds left after Vick hit her fourth three-pointer of the quarter. Muchemore responded for Rivier with a buzzer-beating three-pointer from midcourt to keep the Raiders within 4 points, 26-22, at the end of the quarter.
In the second, Trinity outshot the Raiders 23-20, with the Bantams shooting 47.37% from the field compared to Rivier's 43.75%. Muchemore's three-pointer at 2:48 tied the game, but Trinity closed the half strong, going on a 9-2 run to take a 53-46 lead into the break.
The Bantams controlled the game in the third quarter, never letting their lead dip below 6 points. Both teams struggled with their shooting in the period, with Trinity posting its lowest shooting percentage of the game (43.75%) and Rivier shooting 15.38%. Whitmore led Trinity with 7 points in the quarter, while A. Marzo added 4. A fast-break layup by Lucy Palmer in the final seconds gave the Bantams an 11-point lead, 68-57, heading into the fourth.
With 4:52 left in the game, Samantha Slofkiss extended Trinity's lead to 17 points, their largest of the night, after scoring the Bantams' 82nd point. However, Rivier responded with an 8-0 run, largely fueled by free throws, to cut the deficit to under 10 points. Despite the Raiders' late surge, Trinity maintained its composure and held on for the 91-82 win, capped by a pull-up jumper at the buzzer from Maya Carnes.
Trinity dominated in bench points, outscoring Rivier 23-3, and also held the advantage in second-chance points, 16-13. Rivier found success off turnovers, converting 10 points to Trinity's 4. The Bantams also won the rebounding battle, 41-26.
Trinity shot 51.4% (36-of-70) from the field, 47.4% (9-of-19) from three-point range, and 83.3% (10-of-12) from the free-throw line. Rivier shot 39.7% (25-of-63) overall, 29.6% (8-of-27) from beyond the arc, and 82.8% (24-of-29) from the charity stripe.
The Bantams return to action on Saturday, November 23, when they host Emmanuel College for a 3:00 PM non-conference matchup.
