Men's Basketball NESCAC Semifinal Preview: #4 Tufts

HARTFORD, Conn. – The two-seed Trinity College Men's Basketball team will square off with fourth-seeded Tufts University in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship Semifinals at Williams College Saturday at 4:30 p.m.


Bantam Bytes

  • The Bantams own a 24-1 record on the season, matching the program high for wins in a season, done twice previously in 1983-84 (24-2) and 1994-95 (24-5).
  • Trinity was ranked fourth in the latest D3hoops.com Men's Basketball Top 25 Poll.
  • The Bantams defeated Wesleyan University, 74-67, in the NESCAC Quarterfinals.
  • Trinity leads the nation in scoring margin, defeating opponents by an average of 22.4 points per game.
  • Nationally, the Bantams are ranked in the top 10 in field goal defense (third), scoring defense (third), assist-turnover ratio (sixth), and rebounding margin (ninth).
  • Trinity led the NESCAC in field goal percentage (.454), field goal defense (.365), and three-point field goal percentage (.347).
  • In conference, the Bantams rank second in scoring (78.0), assists (411), and assists/game (16.44); third in steals (306) and steals per game (8.24); fourth in blocks (118) and fifth in rebounding (41.0).
  • Senior Ben Callahan-Gold is the fourth-highest scorer in the NESCAC, generating 17.2 points per game, while shooting 44.5% from the floor with a league-high 80 three-pointers on the season.
  • Sophomore Henry Vetter is adding 14.2 points per game and ranks first in the NESCAC in free throw percentage (.938) and third in assists, averaging 3.6 per game.
  • Sophomore Jarrel Okorougo is shooting 53.5% from the field, fourth-best rate in the conference, and graduate Dana Smith ranks seventh in assists with 3.3 dimes per contest.
  • All time, the Bantams are 46-39 against Tufts.

Scouting the Jumbos

  • Tufts enters the matchup with a 19-6 record after collecting a 66-46 victory over fifth-seeded Middlebury College in the Quarterfinals.
  • The Jumbos posted a 5-5 mark in conference play including a 62-57 victory over top-seeded Williams College.
  • In the NESCAC, Tufts ranks second in field goal percentage (.450) and opponent field goal percentage (.381), trailing the Bantams in both categories.
  • In conference, the Jumbos rank third in rebounding (41.9) and assists (15.68); and fourth in scoring offense (74.2), scoring defense (64.2), and steals (7.52).
  • Sophomore Scott Gyimesi leads the Tufts offense, averaging a double-double of 13.8 points and a league-high 11.1 rebounds per game.
  • Gyimesi leads the conference in field goal percentage, shooting 59.2% from the field.
  • Junior Khai Champion is adding 11.5 points per game, while sophomore James Morakis is contributing 11.0 points per game.
  • Senior Jay Dieterle ranks third in conference in steals (1.5) and sixth in assists (3.4).


Last Meeting vs. Tufts

  • The Bantams posted an 82-66 victory over the Jumbos in their regular season finale on February 10.
  • Trinity had four scorers in double figures, led by 19 points from Callahan-Gold.
  • Okorougo logged a season-high 18 points with six rebounds and four assists, while Vetter flirted with a triple-double, tallying 10 points, nine assists and eight rebounds.
  • Junior Will Dorion netted a season-high 14 points in the win.
  • Sophomore Joshua Bernstein led the Jumbos with 14 points, while Dieterle and first-year Dylan Reilly had 11 points apiece.
  • The Bantams outrebounded the Jumbos, 42-37, while the Tufts bench outscored Trinity's, 26-16.
