Men's Hockey NESCAC Quarterfinal Preview: #8 Colby

HARTFORD, Conn. – The top-seeded Trinity College Men's Hockey team will host eight-seed Colby College in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship Quarterfinals at the Koeppel Community Sports Center Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

  • The Bantams wrapped the 2023-24 regular season with a 20-3-1 record, logging their first 20-win season since 2017-18.
  • Trinity grabbed the top-seed in the tournament after posting a 16-1-1 record in NESCAC play.
  • The Bantams moved up to fifth in the latest edition of the U.S. College Hockey Online (USCHO) Division III Men's Hockey Poll.
  • Nationally, the Bantams rank second in scoring defense, allowing 1.29 goals per game; sixth in penalty kill percentage (.897) and 21st in scoring with 3.46 goals per game.
  • In conference, Trinity leads the league in points (221), points per game (9.21), assists (138), assists per game (5.75), goals (83), goals per game (3.46), goals allowed (31), and goals allowed per game (1.29).
  • The Bantams power-play unit is ranked second, converting at a .202 clip with 17 power-play goals.
  • The Trinity penalty kill unit is ranked 10th in conference, allowing seven goals on 78 chances.
  • Senior Ned Blanchard sits fifth in the NESCAC in assists with 15.
  • Junior Richard Boysen is ninth in conference in points with 19 with eight goals and 11 assists.
  • Senior Christian Hayes has posted 18 points behind a team-high nine goals and nine assists.
  • Seniors Kyle Tomaso and Devan Tongue have tallied 17 points apiece.
  • Sophomore goaltender Devon Bobak owns a 1.27 goals against average, ranking fifth in the nation, with a .937 save percentage and 448 saves.
  • The Bantams are 31-15-2 all-time against Colby College.
 
Scouting the Mules
  • Colby finished up the regular season with a 9-11-4 record and a 5-9-4 mark in conference to earn the eighth-seed in the Championship Tournament.
  • The Mules are 3-1-1 over their last five games, posting victories over Amherst (3-1), Wesleyan (4-1) and Conn College (1-0 OT).
  • Colby ranks fifth in points (169), points per game (7.04), assists (102), assists per game (4.25), goals (67), and goals per game (2.67).
  • The Mules have blocked the fourth-most shots in the league with 281, averaging 11.71 per game.
  • Colby ranks second in faceoff percentage, winning at a .535 clip in the circle.
  • The Mules power-play unit is fifth in conference, converting at 15.8% with 12 power-play goals.
  • Colby has allowed the most power plays to opponents, ranking seventh in conference on the penalty kill, posting a .926 success rate.
  • Defensively, the Mules have allowed the sixth-most goals in the league (61) with opponents averaging 2.54 goals per game.
  • Senior John McElhaney recorded a team-high 18 points with a team-high seven goals and 11 assists.
  • Senior Jack Sullivan has 15 points, ranking ninth in conference with 13 assists.
  • First-year Jayden Grier has added a game-high seven goals, including three game-winning goals, second-most in the NESCAC.
  • Senior goaltender Andy Beran ranks fourth in saves (605) and save percentage (.911) with a 2.55 goals against average.
 
Last Meeting vs. Colby
  • The Bantams won both meetings against the Mules this season, outscoring Colby, 9-5.
  • Trinity posted a 4-2 victory at Colby in their first meeting.
  • The Bantams jumped to a 2-0 lead, until the Mules evened the score at 2-2 in the third period. Trinity used goals from junior Alexander Mozian and senior Casey Rhodes in the final four minutes to secure the 4-2 win.
  • In the series finale, Trinity scored in the opening nine seconds off play en route to a 5-3 win.
  • The Mules rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the first period to even the score at 2-2 heading into the second period.
  • The Bantams potted three second period goals from seniors Gerard Marretta and Richard Boysen, and junior Theodore Griffin to grab the 5-3 victory.
