HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Men's Ice Hockey team battled valiantly against Hobart College, falling to the Statesman, 2-0, in the NCAA Division III Men's Ice Hockey National Championship Game at the Koeppel Community Sports Center Saturday night.
The Bantams wrapped their season with a 25-4-1 record, their most wins in a season in program history, besting the 24-1 mark set in 1986-87. Hobart posted a 28-2-1 record en route to back-to-back National Championship titles.
After a scoreless first period of action, the Statesman broke the 0-0 tie late in the second period as senior Jonah Alexander and junior Luke Aquaro worked a 2-on-1 advantage deep in the Bantams zone. Alexander fed a crashing Aquaro near the goal mouth, where Aquaro tucked a shot past Trinity sophomore goaltender
Devon Bobak, handing Hobart a 1-0 lead after two periods.
Trailing 1-0 in the final minutes of action, the Bantams pulled their goal to create a man-advantage, but Trinity was unable to generate an equalizer, and junior Matthew Iasenza potted an empty net goal with 25 seconds to play, sending the Statesman to the 2-0 victory.
The Statesman outshot the Bantams, 34-24, and won the battle in the faceoff circle, 25-17. The Bantams had four power play opportunities during the game, but a stout Hobart penalty kill unit limited Trinity to two shots across the four man-advantage opportunities.
Bobak stopped a game-high 32 shots for the Bantams, while Hobart sophomore goaltender Damon Beaver registered the shutout with 24 saves.
