Trinity Falls to No. 1 Middlebury College in NESCAC Quarterfinals

MIDDLEBURY, VT. - Despite winning game two, the Bantams' hopes in the New England Small College Athletic Conference tournament were dashed as they fell 2-1 in the series to the Middlebury College Panthers.

GAME 1: Middlebury 6-5 Trinity

  • The Panthers took the lead with a base hit through the right side by K. McCauslan, bringing home S. Smith and Z. Malley, putting them ahead 2-0.

  • Sean Meth broke the Bantams' scoring drought with a powerful three-run homer over the left-center fence in the seventh inning, propelling them into the lead at 3-2 with their sixth hit of the game.

  • Middlebury's McCauslan reached first base due to a throwing error by the Bantams' shortstop, allowing the tying run to score.

  • Tyler Bernstein entered the game as a pinch hitter for Andrew Park at the start of the 8th inning. Bernstein reached first base due to a fielding error by the Panthers' shortstop. During Jack Matthews' at-bat, Bernstein stole second base and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. 

    • Jack Matthews drew a walk, loading the bases for the Bantams with no outs, with runners now on first and third. Tyler Fairchild came in to pinch hit for Luis Saldivia and delivered a single to left field, scoring the go-ahead run, Bernstein, making it 4-3.

    • Following Fairchild's at-bat, Aidan Stern executed a sacrifice bunt, advancing the runners to second and third. Dylan Schnitzer then hit into a fielder's choice to the pitcher, resulting in Matthews being thrown out at home by the Panthers' pitcher to catcher. However, both Schnitzer and Fairchild capitalized on the bases, executing successful steals, with Fairchild crossing home plate to register the Bantams' fifth run before the final out of the inning.

  • In the bottom of the 8th inning, the Panthers mounted a challenge against the Bantams' lead, scoring one run and narrowing the gap to make it a one-run game heading into the 9th. Middlebury managed to hold the Bantams at five runs, tying the score 5-5 with a sacrifice fly, sending the game into extra innings.

  • Unfortunately for the Bantams, they fell to the Panthers in the 10th inning when McCauslan hit a walk-off solo home run over the left field fence, sealing Middlebury's victory.

  • Ian Brown delivered a solid 7.2 inning performance, recording four strikeouts while allowing six hits and four runs. Brendan Grady took over the pitching duties from Brown, aiming to close out the final two innings. Unfortunately, despite his efforts, Grady was charged with the loss in extra innings.

GAME 2: Trinity 16-13 Middlebury

  • Middlebury took an early lead, securing two runs in the opening inning with a 2 RBI single to center field. Trinity responded in the fourth inning, narrowing the gap to one run after Jack Matthews singled to center field, scoring Tyler Bernstein.

  • Trinity knotted the score and surged into the lead in the fifth inning. Jack Ryan's single scored the Bantams' second run, followed by another single from Tyler Bernstein, bringing home Jack Ryan, to take the lead 3-2. However, Middlebury's D. Byrne doubled down the left field line in the bottom of the 5th, bringing in the tying run, making it 3-3.

  • The Bantams regained the lead after Tyler Bernstein's sacrifice fly to left field scored William Sawyer. Middlebury leveled the game again in the later innings, as B. Angstman's well-placed bunt allowed C. Bohlig to score, tying the game at 4-4.

  • A critical error in the 10th inning set the Bantams up with runners on third and first with no outs. Tyler Fairchild's sacrifice bunt moved Jack Matthews to second, putting runners on second and third with one out. Aidan Stern's base hit through the right side drove in the winning run, sealing the victory for the Bantams, 5-4.

  • In game two, the Bantams utilized three pitchers. Tyler Griffin pitched 4 innings, tallying 1 strikeout, 4 hits, and 3 runs. Michael Aceto followed with 3 scoreless innings, allowing no hits. Joseph Capano closed out the game, earning the win while allowing 3 hits and 1 run.

GAME 3: Middlebury 18-12 Bantams

  • In the decisive game, the Bantams took an early lead and maintained it through the first 6 innings of play. Trinity built a 4-0 lead after 4 1/2 innings, scoring two runs in the first inning from a single by Jack Ryan and a bases-loaded walk. In the fourth inning, Tyler Fairchild reached on an error by the Panthers' first baseman, advancing Fairchild to second and allowing Sean Meth to score. The Bantams added their fourth run in the fifth inning after Jack Ryan's double down the left field line brought home William Sawyer.

  • Middlebury broke their silence in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three runs to narrow the gap to a two-run game entering the sixth inning. However, Trinity responded strongly as William Sawyer's single through the left side scored two more runs, putting the Bantams ahead by three at the close of the sixth inning, 6-3.

  • The seventh inning saw a surge from the Panthers as they catapulted into a 15-6 lead over the Bantams. Trinity rallied in the top of the eighth, adding six runs to close the gap to 15-12, but they were unable to overcome the Panthers, ultimately falling with a final score of 18-12.

The Trinity College Baseball team concluded the 2024 season with an overall record of 14-22, 5-7 in NESCAC play, earning the program's 13th visit to the NESCAC tournament.
