Football Handles Bates, 28-7

LEWISTOWN, Maine - The Trinity College Football Team stayed consistent this week scoring a touchdown in each frame to cruise to a 26th straight victory over the Bates College Bobcats, 28-7, in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) game at Garcelon Field Saturday afternoon. In another tough defeat for the Bobcats, they drop to 0-2 on the year and will travel to Wesleyan next week still searching for their first win since 2022.

The Bantams offensive attack started with a bang as they struck quickly benefiting from a 56-yard touchdown scamper from emerging sophomore star Jack Tosone. All four of Trinity's touchdown drives including this long play touchdown lasted under four minutes on the day. In the middle of the first with a chance to go up two scores early, after a Bates three and out they turned the ball over on downs after failing to convert outside of the redzone on the 21-yard line.

Early in the second it was off the legs and hands of another running back, junior Tyler DiNapoli, who willed the Bantams into scoring position which was capped off by a 10-yard connection between graduate quarterback Zander Zebrowski and senior wide receiver Sean Clapp.

It was again the Bantams who continued to pour it on scoring a third straight touchdown with a second straight connection between Zebrowski and Clapp. This was to reach a score of 21-0 with less than half of the third quarter remaining. Zebrowski continues to impress with good early season performances at home and on the road. This week to the tune of 209 total yards and three touchdowns through the air.

From here it was the Bobcats who added to the score board with a 1-yard rushing touchdown from sophomore Ryan Lynskey. This twelve play 78-yard journey down the field included multiple uncharacteristic moments for the Bantams including a 42-yard pickup by Bates on 3rd and 19. This rushing touchdown brings to a close a 13-game streak without allowing a rushing touchdown dating back to October 22nd of 2022.

In response, halfway through the fourth the Bantams set up by a stellar 20-yard return off an interception by senior Ma-Lyke Davis the Bantams scored again. This time in a 9-yard connection between do it all junior wide receiver Nolan O'Brian and Zebrowski.

On the day defensively anchored by an elite secondary that had four interceptions the front seven of the defense came up tough against Bates unrelenting rushing attack. Despite allowing a touchdown on forty-six rushing attempts by the Bobcats the Bantams held them to only 3.2 yards per carry and 213 yards total on the day. The defense was anchored by Junior newcomers Jose Ruiz and Amari Phillips who combined for fifteen tackles and a sack.

The Bantams return home next week to face the 2-0 Williams College Ephs in a battle of the undefeated. This NESCAC home contest will kickoff at 1:00 pm and the Bantams hold the recent advantage carrying a 2-game winning streak against the Ephs.

"It's good be 2-0. We didn't play great. On the offensive side of the ball, we didn't execute like we wanted to. We missed a lot of tackles on defense. As a team we are still a work in progress but at least we are 2-0." – Jeff Devanney
