HARTFORD, Conn. – The Trinity College Field Hockey team secured a thrilling 3-2 victory over the visiting WPI Goats on Tuesday night at Robin L. Sheppard Field. With this win, the Bantams improved their record to 3-3, while the Goats fell to 4-4 for the season.
WPI struck first in this non-conference matchup. After two consecutive penalty corners, the Goats capitalized on a defensive save by Trinity's Eva McKelvey. The rebound fell to WPI's Alexandra Wolf, who tipped it in to give her team an early lead.
Trinity dominated the second quarter, outshooting the Goats 4-0. With just three minutes left in the half, Maeve Hymovitz broke through three defenders in the midfield, feeding the ball into the circle to Claire Griffith. As WPI's defense scrambled to recover, Griffith tapped a pass to Aly Janssen, who pulled the Goats' goalkeeper out of position. Janssen then slipped a pass to Tatum Stickney, who redirected the ball perfectly into the bottom right corner of the cage, tying the game at 1-1 at halftime.
In the third quarter, the Bantams continued their strong performance, limiting the Goats to another shotless period while controlling play. Trinity earned three penalty corners and capitalized on two, extending their lead to 3-1. Brooke DiBaise scored the Bantams' second goal with a powerful shot from the left side, receiving a pass from Lizzy Deveney at the top of the circle during a penalty corner. The third goal came from a similar play, with Deveney finding Maeve Hymovitz along the end line after the insert. Hymovitz executed a perfect one-time shot into the near side of the cage to secure the two-goal advantage.
Five minutes into the final quarter, the Goats managed to score their second goal. A well-placed through ball created a man-up situation, forcing the Bantams' goalkeeper to step up. Leah Uglevich capitalized on a cross in front of the cage, tapping in the goal with her weak-side stick. Despite the one-goal deficit, Trinity maintained composure, controlling play and keeping the ball in their attacking end for the majority of the final quarter.
The Bantams outshot WPI 14-7, with an 8-4 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams earned limited corner opportunities, with Trinity tallying 3 to WPI's 2. Bantams goalkeeper Hayley Gable recorded one save, while the Goats split time in goal, with Ella Moreau making 2 saves and Myles Lakin collecting 3.
Trinity will host Roger Williams on Saturday, September 28, for a non-conference matchup at Robin L. Sheppard Field.
