Bobcats Down Bantams in NESCAC Opener

LEWISTON, ME – The Trinity College Field Hockey team fell to Bates College in their New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) opener on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats secured a lopsided 4-1 victory on their home turf.

Bates dominated the first period with nine shots, two of which were on target, but Trinity's goalkeeper made crucial saves to keep the game scoreless. Trinity's Aly Janssen had the Bantams' lone shot of the period in the final minute, but it went wide.

The score remained 0-0 through halftime, but Bates broke the deadlock early in the third quarter. Senior Maria Femia scored the first goal of the game amidst heavy traffic in the circle. The Bobcats then added two more goals in quick succession: Lucy Norris scored off a penalty corner, followed by Femia's second goal. Trinity trailed 3-0 heading into the fourth quarter.

Entering the final period, the Bantams had been outshot 18-4. Bates extended their lead in the 51st minute when Anna Lindeis's shot off a corner was initially blocked, but Haley Dwight pounced on the rebound to score the Bobcats' fourth and final goal.

Trinity managed to score their lone goal of the game when Janssen was awarded a penalty stroke. Junior Izzy Deveney converted the stroke, placing the ball in the upper left corner to give the Bantams their only tally.

Bates outshot Trinity 27-5 and had a 13-to-3 edge in shots on goal. Trinity's goalkeeper logged nine saves, while Deveney recorded her second goal of the season and the tenth of her career.

The Bantams will next compete on Saturday, September 14th, at Middlebury College in another NESCAC clash, with the game scheduled to start at 11:00 a.m. in Middlebury, VT.
