Last Minute Goal Lifts Bates Over Women's Soccer, 1-0, In NESCAC Opener

LEWISTON, Maine – The Trinity College Women's Soccer team was edged by host Bates College, 1-0, in their 2024 New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) opener at Garcelon Field Saturday afternoon. The Bantams move to 0-2 on the season, and 0-1 in conference play, while the Bobcats improve to 1-0 in the NESCAC and 2-0 overall.

With less than three minutes remaining in regulation, Trinity first-year goalkeeper Lily Brackin stopped a shot from Bates junior Gabby Monaco, but the loose ball trickled to sophomore Rachel Suh, who found the back of the net to send the Bobcats to the 1-0 win.

The Bantams looked to strike early but attempts from juniors Elena Lindonen and Elsa Deustch were off-target, and senior Sofia Quijada was denied by Bobcats senior goalkeeper Ruby Reimann. Trinity outshot Bates, 7-4, in a scoreless first half.

Trinity controlled play early in the second half, garnering two corner kicks and five shot attempts in a six-minute span, but came away empty handed. The Bantams best opportunity to score came in the 81st minute as sophomore Emma Almoney spun a corner towards the net, where Quijada connected with a header, but the shot was blocked. First-year Lauren Hoh fired a shot off the ensuing loose ball, but Reimann made a key save to preserve the scoreless game.

The Bantams outshot the Bobcats, 19-10, and had the edge in corner kicks, 7-6, during the contest. Brackin made a career-high four saves, while Reimann stopped a game-high six shots for Bates.

Trinity will look to grab their first victory of the season when they host Skidmore College at Trinity Soccer Field Sunday at 1:00 p.m. Bates travels to Emerson next Saturday for a non-conference match at 1:00 p.m.
