Penalty Kick Sends Skidmore Past Women's Soccer, 3-2

HARTFORD, Conn. -  The Trinity College Women's Soccer team fell to visiting Skidmore College, 3-2, in a non-conference match at Trinity Soccer Field Sunday afternoon. The Bantams move to 0-3 on the season, while the Thoroughbreds improve 2-0-1 overall.

Tied at 2-2 in the 87th minute of play, Skidmore senior Ella Stone was taken down inside the box, and was awarded a penalty kick opportunity. On the ensuing attempt, Stone placed the game-winning shot past Trinity sophomore goalkeeper Zoe Tamborello to give the Thoroughbreds the 3-2 lead.

The Bantams broke a scoreless game with 1:03 remaining in the first half when junior Jill Fisher gathered a loose ball and lifted a shot from 30 yards out, beyond the reach of Skidmore junior goalkeeper Avery Rogers and inside the far post to give Trinity the 1-0 lead.

With just over 21 minutes remaining in regulation, Stone played a ball over the Bantams defense to sophomore Abby Lewis in the box. Tamborello rushed from the net to challenge Lewis, but Lewis chipped a shot over Tamborello and into the empty net, evening the score at 1-1.

On a corner kick opportunity in the 83rd minute, sophomore Emma Almoney lofted a cross to the box, where junior Elsa Deutsch put a header on net that was blocked, but the loose ball bounded to the foot of first-year Ava Correnti, who ripped a one-timer to the back of the net, putting Trinity ahead 2-1.

Thirty seconds later, the Thoroughbreds advanced into the Bantams territory where Lewis dropped the ball off into an area of open space and junior Madison Hallett launched a shot from nearly 40 yards out flew over the head of Tamborello and into the back of the goal, knotting the score at 2-2 with 6:38 to play.

Skidmore edged Trinity in the shot column, 14-13, while the Bantams led in corner kick opportunities, 4-3. Tamborello made a career-high seven saves for Trinity, while Rogers stopped two shots for Skidmore.

The Bantams will look to move into the win column when they travel to Middlebury College for a New England Small College Athletic Conference clash Saturday at 11:00 a.m. Skidmore travels to Plattsburgh State Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
